How to Save Money on Back-to-School Shopping – Ramsey Solutions

There it is. The list of school supplies a mile long. And then your kid walks by in a shirt that wasn’t a crop top last season and tells you their feet grew a size and a half during flip flop season.

You’ve got a lot to buy, but these 14 tips on back-to-school shopping can help you prioritize your spending and save money.

1. Create and prioritize your list of back-to-school shopping needs.

Before you start spending money on the school year, create a list of needs and put them in order from most pressing to least. You may not be able to cover everything right away—but this list will help you see what to tackle first.

2. Make a back-to-school budget.

Once you have that list of needs, you need to create a budget to make it all happen. What school-related needs will occur every month (like after-school care or an extracurricular activity fee)?

3. Save on clothing by seeing what you already have.

Kids grow. And growing means outgrowing clothing. Before you start back-to-school shopping for longer pants and wider shirts, shop your kids’ closets and drawers.

4. Spread out the shopping.

Don’t feel like you have to buy a completely new wardrobe before school starts—because you don’t. Spread out the spending over several months.

5. See what supplies you already have.

At the end of last year, your child emptied their cubby, desk or locker and brought home a mixed bag of stuff: part trash, part memories, and part still-useable supplies. If you kept any of that good stuff, can you use it this year?

6. Know the difference between “cheap” and “value.”

Tacos, sandcastles, zoo fences and school supplies. What do these things have in common? No one wants them to fall apart. Inexpensive things sometimes do just that with daily use. As you hunt for deals, think more about the word “value” than the word “cheap.”

7. Use the dollar store for some back-to-school shopping.

Using your “cheap” vs. “value” thinking, check out your local dollar store. Yes, you’ll see plenty of junk, but you might be surprised at the quality finds awaiting you.

8. Don’t rule out the prepared back-to-school supply box.

Here’s the thing: We can put a lot of stress on ourselves doing all that extra shopping and end up saving only a couple of dollars—or really no dollars at all! Check into the prepared supply box your school probably offers each grade.

9. Buy used.

Don’t force your preteen to sport a used Dora the Explorer backpack because it was the only one at the thrift store. But also, don’t feel like everything has to be brand-new every year.

10. Take advantage of that back-to-school tax-free weekend.

If your state has sales tax and is having a tax-free weekend this year, find out when and get in on those savings!

11. Download apps to your favorite stores.

Target and Walmart have apps with some serious savings perks when you’re back-to-school shopping (or doing any shopping, to be honest). You can get special offers, see store pickup options, and check out clearance items, all from the palm of your hand.

12. Use coupons while back-to-school shopping.

Hey, coupons aren’t just for grandmas. You can save so much money by finding coupons online or even those old-fashioned paper sales ads.

13. Find stores that price match.

Some stores will offer to match prices if you find a better deal elsewhere. Office Depot, Walmart, Michael’s, Kohl’s, and Target are a few stores that offer this shopping benefit.

The CK Daily – Feeding the Body and Soul

Happy Monday CK Fam!!

I’m 11 days into fatherhood and it’s been a whirlwind. Thanks for all the messages and prayers, I’m truly blessed for all the outpouring of love I’ve received from brothers and sisters in Christ.

I’ve become so much more in tune with what my physical body desires as it’s lost sleep and good eating habits the last week and a half. Which is why I’m so thankful that even through lost routine and regular awake / eating times, daily scripture and devotionals are keeping my soul full and that is what carries me the most.

From today’s Jesus Calling: Concentrate on trusting Me, and fearfulness will gradually lose its foothold within you.

I needed this more than I realized. So blessed to not carry the burden of life on my own shoulders.

Much love and blessings to you all,

Corey

Understanding The Basics of Network Switches – CK Learning Center

Networking is a big topic. In fact, it’s too big for a single conversation. In order to distill such a massive concept into manageable bites, it’s best to look at one component of a network at a time. This time around, that bite is network switches. They come in many shapes and sizes, but you can navigate through the field of options pretty easily when you break switch features into three categories.

Managed vs Unmanaged

These two options have a simple trade-off. Unmanaged switches are much easier to deploy. They come with pre-configured networking protocols, security and traffic management. They are typically plug-and-play devices that can make simple and fast additions to an existing network.

Managed switches are the opposite. They require manual configuration before they can be fully deployed. That component grants vastly superior control over security, resource distribution and the overall functionality of the switch. The time and effort spent on deploying managed switches returns a more secure, better managed network (provided the network administrator does the job correctly).

Choosing between these configurations is not a matter of want. They serve separate roles in a robust network. Major nodes should be run by managed switches. They can do the heavy lifting. Where a network might need rapid changes, unmanaged switches shine. Since they are ultimately tied into the properly managed nodes anyway, the easy deployment makes them perfect for simple additions to the whole.

Ports

The point of a switch is to add ports to a network. When choosing, you have to consider three points. The first that comes to mind is speed. Everyone wants a fast network, and in enterprise networks, that want is more of a need. If a switch cannot match the bandwidth capacity of the greater network, then it creates a bottleneck. That isn’t always bad, but you absolutely need to consider the speed of the switch. It can range from 10/100 (fast Ethernet) to tens of Gigabits per second.

Your second consideration is interface. Fast networks often have fiber optics carrying the workload, but fiber optic cables don’t come with a single connector type (unlike Ethernet). In a large enough network, there’s a good chance you’ll be working with a variety of connectors (ST, SC and LC just for starters), and each switch needs to support all of the interfaces expected of it. Double check your connectors before any purchase.

The third consideration only applies to Ethernet, but it’s widely important since most of your devices will tie into the network via Ethernet or WiFi. In particular, Power over Ethernet (PoE) adds a lot of versatility to any network switch. As the name implies, it can carry power for a device through the Ethernet line. This is ideal for endpoint devices that don’t thrive on battery power. Security cameras and WiFi repeaters are two devices that come to mind.

Housing

Switches have to be stored somewhere, and the housing design is going to have a lot of say in where you can put it. Mostly, the two varieties are stackable and standalone. Standalone switches are best when they are physically isolated. If you have a single switch working as a relay for a few devices, standalone is the way to go. Stackable are designed for networking closets and server-style housing. They can be organized more efficiently than standalones, and they can be configured in bulk. They’re a requirement for major nodes on a large network.

This covers the basics of switches. There are still plenty of additional considerations. We haven’t touched on routers, firewalls, signal repeaters, cables or any of the other big topics, but with this overview, you should have a good feel for what you want out of your switches. When you know the ports you need, the housing style and how a switch will be managed, the rest is just trying to get the most performance and features for you buck.

How does Cat8 Ethernet Compare to 40G Fiber Optic Solutions? – CK Learning Center

Enterprise networking is in an exciting place right now. Cat8 Ethernet cabling is finally becoming widely available. With that availability comes a drop in price and a viable alternative to fiber optics for 40G networking. This means that enterprise servers and networking systems have substantially widened options for all manner of applications. With that excitement comes the need for careful review. Today, we’re going to compare Cat8 and fiber optics in 40G networks to help you determine which is best for your own foray into 40G.

Cat8 Ethernet

Before we look into Cat8 as a means of cabling 40G applications, it’s important to overview the basics. It’s a fairly new addition to the copper family, and it’s made specifically for high-speed service. Cat8 utilizes the same two-pair concept as other copper cables. The secret to the extremely high-performance speeds lies in the transmission frequency. Cat8 operates at 2 GHz. This enables a much larger stream of data through the cable each second, but it requires substantially more shielding to combat interference and cross-talk.

Cat8 can handle 10G, 25G and 40G networking demands at distances up to 30 meters. It still works with RJ-45 connectors, but it can also be sourced with Class II non-RJ45 connections when needed.

Why Is Cat8 Good for 40G?

Cat8 was made for 25G and 40G networks. They still represent an extremely large section of enterprise networking, so it makes sense that Cat8 is seeing rapid growth in market share. It is designed to be forward and reverse compatible with 10G, 25G and 40G networking equipment. This makes it a great choice for networks that are in transition to servicing higher data loads.

The biggest advantage of Cat8 is that it’s a copper-based cable. This eliminates the need for fiber transceivers, and it makes Cat8 significantly more cost-effective than fiber optics when it can be used. The thicker, more heavily shielded Cat8 cables cost more than other copper solutions, but it’s a clear means to saving money on 40G networks.

The other advantage of Cat8 is the RJ45 connection. This enables it to work perfectly with a wide range of networking devices. The flexibility is a powerful tool for upgrading systems under a budget. The legacy and newest systems can all be serviced by the same cable, and that reduces timeline and spending stresses that can occur with less-flexible technology.

Fiber Optics

Fiber optics have formed the backbone of elite data transmissions for decades. The technology has the highest capacity for sending large amounts of data across long distances at high speeds. It’s unparalleled when performance is all that matters. That said, 40G networks don’t require the most elite equipment on the market, and they amply service the majority of enterprise applications. Because of that, we’re going to focus on fiber optics that are optimized for 40G networking. That primarily consists of OM3 and OM4 cables.

Why Use Fiber Optics for 40G?

First, we have to acknowledge the drawbacks. Aside from cost, OM3 and OM4 cables are designed to work at distances of 100 & 150 meters. Those distances can certainly be expanded with additional equipment, but that feeds back into the cost problem.

That said, fiber optics are still prominent in countless 40G systems. There are two strong reasons for this. To start, fiber optics were servicing 40G before Cat8 existed. Because of this, fiber designs are more prominent, and it’s easier to learn from the experience of network designers who have been working with this technology for a long time. The experience gap matters, and it can sometimes overcome the additional hardware costs.

The bigger reason fiber is still great in 40G is future proofing. Cat8 has data limits ceilings that are much lower than fiber alternatives. You might be upgrading to 40G today, but in a few years, you may need to go faster. The fiber optics you install today can be selected to handle 100G or 400G down the road. It is a more expensive short-term investment, but you can recover that money through proper long-term planning.

Ultimately, there is no clear victor. The pros and cons of each cable solution are clear. Making the right choice will require you to decide how you prioritize your spending both today and down the road.

The CK Daily – Learning How to Slow Down

I have had this unusual feeling like something has been off lately. You know one of those things where you can’t really put your finger on it, but you just feel like something is out of sorts or different. This has been going on with me for about a month or so.

I was driving down the road yesterday and hit me what was going on. I have been running non-stop for the past two years with stuff going on:

…work was crazy at the start of 2019

…one of my best friends unexpectedly passed away at the end of 2019

…while still processing his death a global pandemic started up in 2020

…then the world went into lockdown, and I had to learn a new way of working (WFH!)

…then I put my house on the market and had to take care of stuff with it (sold within 3 days)

…then I had to move out

…then I bought a new construction house and was dealing non-stop with that process

…moved in with my parents for 2 months (grateful for the place to stay, but thankful to be back out of there…haha!)

…got moved into the new house and got everything settled

…and now here I am taking a deep breath and wondering why I am not going 100+mph anymore like I have been for the last 2 years.

That weird feeling that I am experiencing right now that I mentioned above is the feeling of me getting to relax and not knowing how to anymore…haha! After going non-stop for so long, I have realized that I really don’t know what it feels like to relax – physically, emotionally, or mentally. I have been on the go and busy so much between work, church, family, the houses, and life that I forgot how to slow down or at least how to ENJOY life when it automatically slows down. I feel like Ricky Bobby from Talladega Nights:

Does that make any sense? Anyone been in that same boat before – not knowing what to do or how to enjoy life/your time when things finally slow down a bit and you are not going 100mph in 50 different directions? Maybe I should try goat yoga or something like that??

Jason

Product Spotlights & Updates

Happy Friday-eve CK Family! We hope you’ve had a great week so far. Today we’re highlighting the Cisco 2960-X Series 48 Port LAN Base Switch, WS-C2960X-48TS-L.

Cisco has always done an amazing job with catering to small and medium businesses. The Cisco 2960-X series is another generation to the already popular 2960 series that will enable the typical small to medium business to function at an enterprise level without the enterprise budget. The 2960-X series switches offer a fixed configuration of Ethernet switches that are not only Gigabit but also stackable. The 2960-X was specifically designed for easy deployment and operational efficiency. These switches are also energy cautious and have a large range of IOS software features.

Jason B. left a pretty great review that really sums up the greatness of this switch better than we could. Jason wrote, “This switch is the GOLD STANDARD. More than likely, regardless of the complexity of the network, this switch, the 2960X, is in your company’s data closet. Why? It is because your network administrator is really smart 😉 “Does this port work?” – They remember the days of sticking pieces of paper into the ports that have gone bad. They are not interested in chasing network anomalies, on top of all of the other problematic possibilities, in the endless pursuit of end-user satisfaction. Don’t spend any more time looking for the best switch for your network or your customer’s network – you’ve found it. Congrats!”

Enjoy 20% off this week on this “Gold Standard” switch!

Understanding Wavelengths – CK Learning Center

No one ever accused fiber optics of being simple technology. Instead, we tend to acknowledge that this powerful technology is difficult to design and complicated in its application. Mastering those complications is often worth it because it enables us to build better networks and do a better job with those networks. We can tackle a brief tutorial on wavelengths and how they impact fiber optic designs in that endeavor.

What Is Wavelength?

The second word in “fiber optics” already tells us plenty about the nature of this technology. It deals with light — more specifically electromagnetic radiation — as the signaling medium. Wavelength is very simply a measure of the space between two photons in a solid beam of light. Conversely, we have frequency which measures the time between two signals. The two terms are opposite sides of the same coin. If you have a shorter wavelength, it takes less time between signals and a higher frequency.

With this in mind, the wavelength (or frequency) of any light source tells us the physical limitation of how we can use that light in signal processing. We can never send signals that are faster than the frequency of the beam, and we cannot use equipment that is smaller than the wavelength. This is a rough summary, but it paints a good enough picture.

Aside from the basics, the wavelength also tells us how light will interact with other objects. When it comes to designing fiber optics, those interactions are the most important pieces of information hiding within a wavelength.

Absorption

When fiber optics are engineered and tested, there are two issues that can impact their effectiveness. Absorption is one of them. Materials have a natural ability to absorb electromagnetic radiation. For any given substance, only radiation of certain wavelengths can actually interact and be absorbed. When we deal with fiber optic cables, the largest source of absorption actually comes from microscopic water droplets. That drives manufacturers to avoid wavelengths where that absorption is at its worst.

Scattering

Like absorption, scattering happens at different wavelengths for any given material. Also like absorption, the culprits of scattering within a fiber optic cable are small and easy to overlook. Particles of dust and even the air itself can cause scattering problems, so again, the design is to use wavelengths where these problems are smallest.

The term for signal loss related to absorption and scattering is attenuation. Engineers try to make attenuation numbers as small as possible, and when you account for both absorption and scattering at the same time, you find that very specific frequencies work best. The most common wavelengths in use today are 850, 1300, 1310, and 1500 nanometers. You’ll notice large gaps between each of those numbers. Those just happen to be the magic wavelengths where the attenuation values hit minima.

This is only the beginning. We can find that different types of fiber optic signals can further impact which wavelength is best for a function. Multimode and singlemode fiber, for instance, have different naturally occurring sources of interference. That’s why they tend to operate with noticeably separate wavelength ranges.

Putting it all together, it isn’t necessary to optimize wavelengths when you choose fiber optic systems. That’s baked into the design. Instead, it helps to understand why wavelength is an important identifier and how emerging, more advanced systems might play with wavelength in order to improve the technology.

7 Ways to Build Greatness – Jon Gordon

1) Design Your Masterpiece – In order to build something, you must first design it. You must know what you want to build. You must have a vision of the masterpiece you are creating. If you can see it, you can create it. If you have a vision you also have the power to make it happen. The key is to be intentional and decide what you truly want to build and create.

2) Work Your Craft – You don’t master your craft or build a masterpiece overnight. It takes a lot of years, hard work, sweat and tears. It’s why Michelangelo said, “If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery it wouldn’t seem so wonderful at all.” It’s a process that requires you to continuously work at your craft in order to improve and grow. A great example of this is Pablo Casals, the famous cellist, who was asked at the age of 90 why he continued to practice. He said, “Because I think I’m making progress.” If you want to master your craft you have to be willing to show up each day and do the work that greatness requires.

3) Build With Optimism – When a craftswoman is building something, she is so focused on creating her vision and masterpiece that she is filled with optimism and belief about what she is building. While there are challenges during the building process the craftswoman uses those challenges as opportunities to innovate and adapt. You must believe in what you are building and find a way to get it done. What you believe determines what you create. So, make sure you maintain your belief and optimism as you build greatness.

4) Love It – The famous opera singer Luciano Pavarotti was asked about his exceptional discipline to continuously work on his craft. He said, “People think it’s discipline but it’s not discipline. It’s devotion.” As a craftsman it’s your love and devotion that will drive your discipline. Your love for what you do will drive you to build greatness. If you don’t love it you’ll never work to be great at it. This means if you want to become a master of your craft then make sure you choose a craft you love. If you love it you’ll be more likely to invest the time to work your craft and be devoted to it.

5) Care More – The difference between just showing up to build something and intentionally creating a masterpiece is reflected in the heart, soul, passion and care that you put into what you are building. If you care more you will do more, give more and create more. To build something great you must care more about what you are building than all of the distractions vying for your attention. Distractions are the enemy of greatness and if you care about your craft you won’t let these distractions get in the way of your growth.

6) Create Inside-Out – A craftsman creates from the inside out. From their spirit, heart, soul, and essence inside them, they create the masterpieces we see in the world. It’s the same way with your life or anything you create. What you see in your outer world is a reflection of your inner world. There’s a word called Meraki. It means to do something with love, creativity, and soul; to leave a piece of yourself in your work; to leave something behind. Being a craftsman/craftswoman is all about Meraki. Put your love and soul into it. Leave a piece of yourself in whatever it is you are building. Leave something behind. Create a masterpiece that reflects the essence of your love, energy, effort, and craft.

7) Take on New Challenges – A craftsman always wants to make their next work their best work and they’re willing to take on new challenges in order to grow. I read a piece by Charles Killian where he shares the story of Donatello rejecting a three-ton block of marble stone because it had too many flaws and cracks in it. The haulers decided to bring it to Michelangelo to see if he wanted the stone. Michelangelo inspected the stone and discovered the flaws and cracks in it as well. But he decided to do something with it. He thought it would be a challenge to his craftsmanship. From that flawed block of marble, he would go on to create the statue of David, the greatest art treasure in the world.

The CK Daily – Keeping Busy with New Products

Happy Tuesday! This week feels like it’s flying by already!

I’m sure I have mentioned this before, but a big part of my role here at CK is introducing new products to our catalog. We have had an amazing year so far from a new product introduction perspective. Being able to apply a very intentional focus on bringing products to our customers that are relevant and in-demand has been so much fun. I love getting to take an idea and bring it to fruition with our monthly new product launches.

What’s even more fun is that it seems like the launches are only getting bigger and more exciting as time goes on! These new product launches are absolutely a team effort and I’m so glad that I work with awesome people who make it happen! That said, things have been super busy around here which has made time feel like it’s moving at warp speed! I’m not complaining though… I enjoy the challenge and would much rather be busy than bored! I hope you are all keeping busy and I hope you have a great week!

Rebecca

Product Spotlights & Updates

We hope you’re having a great Tuesday so far! Today we are spotlighting the Cisco 3560X/3750X Four-Port Gigabit Ethernet Network Module, C3KX-NM-1G. This network module adds four 1 gigabit SFP ports to 3750X and 3560X switches and is hot-swappable. This is an excellent and cost-effective solution when you need to add fiber to your network. Rather than buying another switch with SFP ports, you can add this module to your existing switch for SFP connectivity.

This week only, the C3KX-NM-1G is on sale for 20% off!

What is a Cat8 Ethernet Cable and How is it Different? – CK Learning Center

What is a Cat8 Ethernet Cable?

We were told that Ethernet was going to be a thing of the past. Google tried to make fiber optics the new standard for home internet connections, and it was an obvious choice for scaling industrial applications. Somehow, Ethernet has hung in there, and new iterations arise every few years that continue to push the envelope of traditional copper wires. Today, we’re going to cover the latest iteration: Cat8. We’re going to start with the basics, but in a few short minutes, you’ll have a clear picture of what Cat8 is, how it works and why you need to be thinking about it.

Differences Between Ethernet Categories

You’ve seen the “cat” or category designations, Cat5e and Cat6 and Cat6a, plenty. If you work in more powerful internet settings you might even be familiar with Cat7. The general rule is that a higher number is a newer technology and can support higher data rates, but that’s just one of the main differences:

– Standard bandwidth (measured in MHz)

– Maximum data rate (measured in megabits per second)

– Shielding

Basic Specs for Cat8 Ethernet

Then again, that’s the obvious stuff. To be more specific, Cat5 operates at 100 MHz and can transfer data at speeds up to 1000 Mbps. Cat6 works at 250 MHz and can get up to 1 Gbps. Cat7 ups the ante substantially with 600 MHz and 10 Gbps rates. This is a simplification. There are variations on each cable and some arrangements can boost or inhibit performance, but these are the numbers for which each category is tested and vetted.

The reason Cat8 is turning heads is because it is jumping several iterations in performance. It uses 2 GHz signals to move data from 25 Gbps (Cat8.1) to 40 Gbps (Cat8.2). It’s a serious upgrade, and the implications are turning heads across IT fields.

Want to read more about the speed comparison, why Cat8 Ethernet cost more and learn more about the standard bandwidth? You can find this article on the CK Learning Center here!

The film, with James playing a fictionalized version of himself, is the long-awaited follow-up to 1996’s Space Jam starring basketball all-time great Michael Jordan.
  • You might expect the sign outside a Burger King to offer you a summary of the day’s deals or the number of sales made. The sign outside a Lincoln, Neb. Burger King was a little different. “WE ALL QUIT,” it read. “SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE.” You can read more here.
  • Sam’s Club announced it is testing a new app-based feature, Scan & Ship, that allows people to use a smartphone to buy items in the club and send purchases directly to the home.
