Lessons from Homeschool  | Most Popular PPE | 7965G VoIP Phone | Set Clear Expectations | News to Start Your Day

We’re halfway there! It’s Hump Day!

(October 21st is National Reptile Awareness Day…with Halloween close by, I guess this applies to Slytherin House as well.)

This year for homeschool I am walking through a United States history curriculum with my girls. We started in 1000AD with Leif Erikson coming to North America, and we’ve worked our way up to the early 1700s. Last week our lessons were about Benjamin Franklin. We talked about his Poor Richard’s Almanac, and the girls had a project to cut out and assemble an elementary version of it. Inside there were several pre-printed words of wisdom:

  • Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.
  • Haste makes waste.
  • A penny saved is a penny earned.
  • Half the truth is often a great lie.
  • Honesty is the best policy.
  • The rotten apple spoils his companions.
  • Never leave that till tomorrow which you can do today.
  • Well done is better than well said.

Timeless wisdom. In some ways these things seem to be reminiscent of a time past, but in reality I believe they are just as relevant today as they were when Mr. Franklin printed them. I think we (all humans) often make things more complicated than they have to be. I seek to intentionally speak and live more simply than my detail orientated brain would like because I believe there is wisdom in it.

King Solomon was given “wisdom and understanding beyond measure, and breadth of mind like the sand on the seashore” (1 Kings 4:29) and said in Ecclesiastes 1:9:

What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.

Timeless wisdom.

—-

I am thankful today for being able to homeschool my children and learn lessons with them all over again from an older (and hopefully wiser) point of view.

What is something you are thankful for today? What wisdom do you have that you can share with others?

Donations + S’mores | 3-Ply Mask Deals | SFP-10G-SR | Confronting the Brutal Facts | News to Start Your Day

Happy Monday! Make it Great!

(October 19th is National Chocolate Cupcake Day & National No Beard Day….what a weird combo.)

I’m back! Thanks to Jason for filling in for me on Friday. I usually try to do something more on the fun side with the girls on Fridays, but this week I was inspired by Craig’s recent cleaning out shenanigans to knock some items off my personal to-do list.

When we moved into our house about a year ago, I cleaned out my closet and donated much of it. I held onto a few things and sold them, but I still had a small pile of things that was becominig a nuisance. Since his Crohn’s diagnosis and subsequent diet changes, Craig has lost about 60 lbs, so he had almost an entire closet full of clothes to donate, sell or give away. Our usual outlet for donating hasn’t been available since COVID, but I was able to find a local clothes closet that takes in new or like new clothes, sorts them and then allows foster children to shop there. (Apparently many children in foster care come into their new homes with very little in the way of clothes.) They also help families who need it for whatever reason, mothers and children coming out of domestic violence situations, and house fire victims. Thankfully they had an appointment for drop-off available on Friday, so we filled the back of my SUV with what we had and gave it all away! I’m so glad we found a place that is blessing those in need in our community.

The rest of our weekend was good as well. We enjoyed a movie with friends in our outdoor “theater” (speakers + outdoor movie screen) with the fire pits going and marshmallows roasting. The girls loved it!

I have lots of different things on my plate this week, so I am praying for energy, stamina and clarity of mind around each thing I need to tackle. The right things at the right time, please Lord. I hope each of you has a productive and fulfilling week ahead.

Until tomorrow,

Christin

Update on Craig |  Thermometers | 4-Post Rack Rails | Overcoming Adversity | News to Start Your Day

Happy Wednesday!

(October 14th is National Dessert Day! What’s your favorite dessert?)

It’s Hump Day, friends! I hope your week has been productive. This time of year it seems like the days fly by around here. I guess that comes naturally with more activities, less daylight and a push to end the year well.

Many of you have asked for an update on Craig. He’s doing well! His knee is completely healed now, no more limping or brace. He’s working with a friend on some clean out, organization and other projects around our place. So far they spent a week cleaning and organizing our barn, and it looks awesome! He’s always been good at big clean up projects. They even mopped the concrete floors and pulled the RV into its home. The kids are loving riding their bikes in the big open space now.

This week he is working on some wifi improvements in our home, has a tree company coming to remove some dead trees, and is working on little handy things like adjusting doors that don’t catch just right. Rest for him rarely involves sitting and relaxing. He is enjoying the mental break for sure. We appreciate you all asking about him!

Make sure you check out our product updates below. Rebecca, Jason and team are working hard to bring you good content each and every day. Besides the new product, bundle and pricing updates, I especially love the fact section that Jason curates for us.

See you on the other side of the hump…

Thankfulness | Pulse Oximeters | Face Masks Sale | Cisco GLC-T | How to Decide? | News to Start Your Day

Happy Tuesday!

(Did you know today, 10/13, is “International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction”? We didn’t either.)

——

Ever wonder why some Mondays are knocked it out of the park, get it done days and others feel like walking through quicksand? I know I do.

Yesterday was a tough one at our house. It seemed like there were issues with everything we tried to do. I had a simple art project for the kids to start our school week out on a fun note. (Note to self: This notion of fun should probably be avoided. Mondays must be trying to tell me they are for serious business only.) The supplies I laid out weren’t working, so I went to look for more. The kids took that opportunity to get up and play with their stepping stones. As I’m rounding them up to come back to the table, I’m thinking we’re going to have to abandon this project to hit our time line today if these new supplies don’t work. Then the door bell rings. It felt like *insert hair on fire emoji* haha.

As I went through some meetings in the afternoon, I found out I was in good company. Many voiced to me that they had the same sort of Monday. Just one of those days, as they say.

To avoid the Monday blues carrying over into Tuesday, I’m practicing a little purposeful thankfulness. Join me?

I am thankful for: being able to watch my children learn and grow, projects being completed at our house (sabbaticals are great for honey-do lists), productive business meetings, Starbucks + pumpkin spice

What are you thankful for today?

Christin

PS…a quick product spotlight…

Who am I? | Face Masks Update | 10G Transceivers | Challenging the Consensus | News to Start Your Day

Who Am I? – Part 1 (A personal and CK Story)

I mentioned to you in my introduction email that, before this year, I had been away from the day-to-day operations of our business for many years. It was a huge lifestyle change and honestly a really hard transition for me when I stepped away. Achievement and what I did was quite literally who I was up to that point in my life. I didn’t know myself outside of school or work.

I started college my junior year of high school through a dual enrollment program that was available here in Georgia. Credits for the college classes I was taking also counted towards my high school credits to graduate. I decided to take my entire course load at college my senior year of high school, graduated high school as my class valedictorian (a goal I set for myself in the 6th grade), took a full load at college that summer semester, then finished my associate’s degree in Chemistry (with extra credits beyond what I needed for the degree) that next year. I was 18 years old, ready to begin at the University of Georgia as a second semester junior, and I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. Math and science came easy to me. Achievement was who I was. Surely I could figure the rest of it out.

I ended up leaving UGA after one semester because I was burnt out (shocker, right?) and lacked direction. Playing in the bigger pond of a major university, entering as a junior, and generally not knowing what was next in life created an environment that left me anxious and lacking in fulfillment. The business that is now CK began in October of that year, Craig and I were engaged in November and in December I left school to begin working with him to build what was then just an opportunity into a business. Looking back it is easy enough to see that I was running from something rather than running with purpose towards something new. But I was 19, in love, and excited about making a change. It felt right, surely that meant it was right.

I poured my achievement mindset into the life and business we were building. We became that young, successful couple with the cool story. We worked side by side (literally, desks side by side) for 5 years, mostly working 3-6 hours a day during that time, making more money than my never-to-be chemistry degree would’ve dared to offer. We ate out and went to movies in the middle of the day, found fun hobbies, and took vacations whenever we wanted. Achievement was still who I was, but this time I had a partner in it and it was a lot more fun.

Fast forward 10 years and I found myself burnt out once again. We were married, hadn’t had any luck starting a family, had both matured but in a weird bubble with each other nearby through the whole thing (we needed some space), and the business had grown to that awkward teenager phase. It needed to be led differently, and we had different ideas about what that looked liked. There was tension. I stepped out of the business then, not realizing that I was stepping right into the mess I had left behind by running for all those years.

[Confession: This story went in a different direction than I intended when I sat down to write. I have decided to go with it, but I will need to break it up into shorter pieces for better deliverability. Part 2 coming tomorrow. I hope you’ll stick with me.]

Weekend Away | CP-7965G Phones | Clorox Wipes & Masks | Business Updates

Happy Monday!

Welcome to the CablesAndKits CEO daily email. Read more about this email by scrolling to the very bottom.

Well, we did it! The camping weekend was a big success. Everyone in both families had a ton of fun. In fact, before we left we reserved two spaces for next year!

We didn’t actually get lost in the woods, but got “lost in thought” in the woods … and then of course this song/video came to mind. See how many 80’s bands you can hear/see in this video haha.

It’s amazing how much “fun” doing nearly nothing can be. Like the line from the movie Office Space, “I did absolutely nothing and it was everything I thought it could be”.

We cooked outside on a flat top grill, sat around the fire talking, and the kids rode their bikes up and down the road for hours. We went to a playground and let all the kids play and also played putt putt before we left. And, going with friends that already knew what they were doing made things that much more enjoyable.

And of course (and if you’ve ever gone camping you already know this) I have a shopping and todo list a mile long! Things I didn’t even know I needed I suddenly cannot live without. It’s incredible, but it’s like any “hobby” where spending money and working on things is actually enjoyable, so it’s great.

The unfortunate downside is I did something to my knee Friday when we got there that caused pretty excruciating pain when I went from bent to straight and visa versa, and constant aching pain even then, especially when not hopped up on Tylenol or Ibuprofen. All the reading I did seemed to point to the need to rest, ice, and elevate, which was pretty hard to do well under the circumstances. Not walking at all was not an option. So I did the best I could, walked straight legged, swinging it around, sitting as often as I could. Now that I’m home I’m trying harder to rest it and let it recover. Good Lord getting older is tough!

It’s amazing what some downtime will do for the mind. Now I’m ready to hit the ground running this week! I highly recommend taking a break every once in a while!

I don’t know if it’s true, but I heard …
