The CK Daily – Georgia’s 7 Wonders

Good Morning & Happy Tuesday! I’m taking a little time off this week to go on a bit of a unique adventure! I’ll be traveling across the state of Georgia in a camper van for the next few days to check out the “7 Natural Wonders” of Georgia!

I actually didn’t know that Georgia had 7 natural wonders until recently, but upon learning this information, I felt compelled to see them all. I mentioned it to a friend who felt the same, and the next thing you know we had a camper van lined up and had decided to make a mission out of seeing all of them in just a few days!

This trip will definitely be taxing as I think we’re in for somewhere around 15 hours of driving in total. We’ll start the trip down in South Georgia at the Okefenokee Swamp and finish in north Georgia checking out Amicalola Falls & Tallulah Gorge! We’ll be staying at Georgia State parks along the way to catch a little rest in between visiting the different locations!

In case you’re interested in what the 7 wonders are, here’s a list!

  • Okefenokee Swamp
  • Radium Springs
  • Providence Canyon
  • Warm Springs
  • Stone Mountain
  • Amicalola Falls
  • Tallulah Gorge

Have you been to any of these? I’d love to know which ones are your favorites!

Rebecca

Learning Center Article – Wiring Ethernet Patch Panels

When you’re building a network, it’s often ideal to use a patch panel to direct cables and organize long Ethernet runs — especially if they go through walls, floors, and/or ceilings. Patch panels make cable management and network organization very easy over long periods of time, but you’ll need to wire the panels in order to put them into your network.

Not to worry, this guide will walk you through the whole process.

The CK Daily – Preparing for Winter

Happy Monday!

I enjoyed some great fall-like weather this weekend and spent time outside and tidying our duck coop/shed. Now is the time I start getting ready for winter (even though it’s months away). We’ve owned ducks and a goose for a number of years now and they are quite entertaining, but a bit high maintenance.

Sometimes at night, we’ll find an eastern kingsnake in their enclosure with a couple of eggs (unbroken) in their stomach. The snakes are pretty much harmless to the ducks, but they do freak the ducks out quite a bit. The snakes are so docile after eating the eggs that I can handle them quite easily and just relocate them. I enjoy having the kingsnakes around because they handle the rodent population and are known to prey on venomous snakes such as copperheads.

As we are getting closer to winter, we’re starting to get our winter preps ready. And over the weekend I was thinking about the concept of cold spares. Have you heard of this before? Essentially you take a duplicate piece of networking equipment that’s exactly identical to the one in production (in use) and have it on a shelf, preconfigured, set up, and ready to go if the equipment in use fails. Refurb products can sometimes be so cost-effective, that purchasing a cold spare might be a great insurance policy for your network for those mission-critical pieces of equipment. It reminds me of the old prepper saying two is one and one is none. Do you have cold spares in your networking closet? What are your backup plans if a mission-critical switch or router fails? I hope you have a great week!

Cris

The CK Daily – Football & Free Articles!

Happy Friday, folks! Last week I wrote that I was taking my daughter to her first college football game. She absolutely loved it! She looked at me at halftime and said, “when are we coming to another game?” So I’ve done my part to create another college football fan!

On a separate note, one of the things we love to do here at CablesAndKits is seeing other people be successful. One of the ways that we strive to do this is by offering a Learning Center (free, of course) that is loaded with content. Most articles are relatively short and can be read in less than 5 minutes (about the time it takes to walk to the breakroom and pour a cup of coffee).

Here are a couple of new articles:

  • Backbone Cabling vs. Horizontal Cabling
  • Aruba Switches vs. Cisco Switches

And a fun article: How fast does email travel?

Are there any topics that you are interested in learning?

Have a great weekend!

Learning Center Article – Polarity for MPO Cables

High-end fiber optics are important to modern networking, but they’re a lot more complicated than some of their older counterparts. If you need the power of fiber, you might be looking into MPO systems. They can hit some of the highest speeds on the market today, but utilizing them requires knowledge. One key piece of knowledge that can help with MPO systems is polarity. Without this knowledge, you won’t get a connection across any of your lines.

The CK Daily – Chili Weather (Almost)

Happy Thursday!

I hope your week has been going great. We are almost to Friday, so that is always a plus!

Y’all are probably tired of us all talking about Fall. I get it. Not sure why I am looking forward to Fall so much this year…I mean football is more than enough but it just seems different this year. Maybe it is because we had such a hot summer and the cooler (hopefully) weather will be nice.

This week we had a small touch of Fall in the weather…it has been a little cooler but the humidity has been non-existent. I figured it would be a good time to make chili this week. I am a chili nut and I like experimenting with different ingredients and making different types. I made a 3-Bean Taco Chili with vegetables. The vegetables and seasonings were the things I tried differently this time around and it seemed to be a hit with the neighbors I had over to watch football Monday night. That recipe is a keeper now!

As I said, I am always up for trying new chili recipes and types, do you have any ideas or recipes you would be willing to share with me? (I know most chili recipes are supposed to be kept secret, but I promise not to tell anyone. Haha!)

Have a great rest of the week and weekend!

Jason

Learning Center Article – How Fast Does Email Travel?

We all know that email is fast. You can send important documents through the virtual systems, and you more or less expect them to arrive instantaneously. Yet, whenever we’re waiting for important emails, it seems like things move a lot slower.

That brings up an important question. How fast does email actually travel? How long does it take to get to a recipient, and why is it always slower when it matters more?

The CK Daily – Reuniting with old friends!

Happy Wednesday! This past weekend I spent some time rekindling with some old friends from grad school and what a sweet time it was. We spent the day in Charlotte, NC on Saturday enjoying various parts of the city, reflecting on our experiences together, and making new memories. We spent a majority of the day at Optimist Hall playing games and enjoying snacks from the various restaurants they have – highly recommend this if you are in the area!

Friendship is such a sweet gift. I think my favorite part of friendship as I get older is those moments of reuniting and celebrating all that they’ve done.

What do you love most about reuniting with old friends?

Learning Center Article – Active vs Passive PoE Switches

Power over Ethernet (PoE) is one of the most useful and convenient mechanisms in modern networking. Devices that require an Ethernet connection can also draw power through Ethernet lines, as long as they’re connected to a PoE ecosystem. This saves time, money, and hassle on running power lines or designing around available outlets.

So, if you are considering working PoE into a network, then there are a few things you’ll need to learn. One such lesson is the distinction between active and passive PoE. Both exist, but they are not universally swappable options. Take a minute to learn more about each type of PoE, and you’ll be able to make the right choice for your network.

Happy Tuesday & Happy Day of the Programmer! Today honors the innovators who continue to change the world, one program at a time.

In This Issue: Fall is coming! | CAT5e Ethernet Patch Cable – 50% off! | Single Mode vs Multimode Fiber Cables | News to Start Your Day

The CK Daily – Fall is coming!

Good Morning & Happy Tuesday!

Around here the sun is out, the birds are chirping, and there’s a crisp coolness in the air which can only mean one thing…. Fall is coming! It’s an exciting time and I’m totally here for it! I’m so thankful to live in a place where we get to experience the changing of seasons (even if some of them feel super short!). If you live in Georgia then you know that Fall and Spring can feel like they go by in an instant, while Summer seems to last forever!

That said, I’ve been looking forward to it feeling like Fall because I’m eager to get out my Fall decorations! It just hasn’t felt “right” yet for decorating, but now I’m feeling inspired! I know it’s controversial, but in recent years I’ve become one of “those people” who starts decorating for Christmas before Thanksgiving, which now means I feel the time crunch to get the Fall decorations out early so I can enjoy them for as long as possible before the Christmas stuff comes out!

What about you? Have you started pulling out the pumpkins and Fall décor yet?

Learning Center Article – Single Mode vs Multimode Fiber Cables

Fiber optics are essential for building the most capable networks, but when making design choices, there are plenty of options that serve fiber optics in general. One of the primary choices available to any network engineer exists between single-mode fiber and multimode fiber.

These are physically different approaches to fiber optics communication, and as such, they offer different strengths and weaknesses. To effectively choose the right design for your network, it helps to have a better understanding of what separates these types of cables.
