The CK Daily – The Opportunity to Do Something Right

Happy Monday, CK Fam!!

Ever driven past someone who is walking down the road and had your heart tell you to offer them a ride? What about help feed the food disadvantaged? I have.

Sometimes we come up with every excuse in the book to avoid meeting these situations head-on. We are called to do it, but our earthly experiences or something even smaller tries to prevent us from outreach to our fellow humans.

This is a PSA to all of the readers here to tell you to take a chance. Volunteer your time. Talk to your church leaders to get involved. Message your local food bank. Meet new people in different walks of life. Minister to them. Smile with them. Love them. Do something.

I hope we are all ready to have a great week and seize those opportunities when they arise or make them arise so that you can get involved.

Thanks all – have a blessed day,

Corey

Best Practices for Cable Management – CK Learning Center

Every network administrator in the world has a horror story about cable management. In data centers, those horror stories grow into genuine nightmares. If enough people work on a system for a long enough period of time, the cables will eventually turn into some type of Ethernet vine monster. Only strict adherence to cable management practices can prevent this disaster. The following best practices assume you already know some of the basics. Instead, they’re aimed to help you avoid subtler missteps that occur frequently in modern data centers.

Plan for Growth

Everyone says this. Everyone acknowledges. It’s still common for data centers to struggle with growing pains. This is the first and most important principle in cable management and network design because it applies to everything else you do. It is easiest to see when planning space for additional cables.

The challenge is finding the sweet spot. If you leave too much space for growth, you’re hurting efficiency. If there is too little, you hit major challenges with future upgrades. The safest and most reasonable rule to follow is that of 50 percent. If your initial design and subsequent add-ons always plan around 50-percent growth, you should stay close to the golden sweet spot.

The other component of planning for growth applies to equipment selection. As you already know, everything in your data center will eventually be obsolete. The most efficient way to manage the cost and labor of upgrades is to plan around cabling. Replacing or upgrading major pathways is the most labor-intensive work in a data center. So, any time that labor is required, it should be accompanied with cable upgrades. Spend the money on the most up-to-date cables and connectors, and you’ll save a lot of pain down the road.

Plan in General

Growth is important, but you need a good plan for the center to function correctly. So much goes into network planning that covering it all here is impossible, but cable management needs to be a central focus in general planning. Modular and gridded support structures enable you to access cables at any point, and it makes replacement and management much simpler. In general, you want an initial plan or add-on to your center to follow a gridded approach. There should never be any doubt as to where any given cable can be accessed for any plausible reason.

Cable Stress

You know the basics of cable management already. Labels and color-coding help to keep track of everything and cables should not be arranged willy-nilly. And, while you already understand that stress is bad for cables, many network engineers still allow too much in their systems. The key to managing cable stress is the same as doing any job in the world: use the right tools.

Head on over to the closest donut shop near you because today is National Donut Day! The best day of the year, right?! What’s your favorite kind of donut? Are you a simple glaze fan, custard-filled, chocolate with sprinkles…the options are endless!

The CK Daily – Break the Monotony of the Day

One of the perks of working from home over the past year or so is the ability to set my own work hours and take mental breaks during the day when I need to. I mean we could do this before in the office but it is tons easier when you are working from home and I personally believe it has helped my mental and emotional clarity in the process. I usually start work early in the morning, around 6:30 (this morning at 4am), then take the dog for a walk and work out about 10:30, then lunch later on and try and wrap up my day around 4:00 when I can. It really has been a huge help for me in balancing work, health, and keeping the dog happy with his walks.

I have learned as I have gotten older that we have to break away from the daily grind even in the middle of it to get clarity of mind and sometimes reset. Getting away from the desk, getting outside, working out, or playing a game have been my go-to’s. Here lately I have been combining the workout and “playing a game” by using my Oculus. If you are not familiar with it…it is CRAZY! It is a Virtual Reality gaming system but has tons of workout stuff, travel videos, learning systems, etc. You can literally travel the world from your living room and be immersed in it. It is unreal. The workouts are intense too. It is like working with multiple trainers from the comfort of your home. (No travel time to the gym!) It works great when you can’t get outside to walk or run or just don’t have the time to. Of course, I do play some games on there as well (Beat Saber and Top Golf are my favorites), but those are just as much of a workout as the real workout sessions. Not sure who this lady is that posted this mixed reality video of Beat Saber on YouTube, but I am nowhere near that good! Chris, the CK President, has one as well, and to say our competitive sides come out when tracking active calories burned during the day might be an understatement.

So, what’s your go-to thing to do to break up the monotony of your workday or just your day in general to maybe get some exercise or relax mentally?

Also, if you have an Oculus, what are your favorite games? I need some new ones to play. haha!

Find Your Courage – The Encouragement Project

Todays Friday encouragement is from the Encouragement Project. You can find it here!

When you are short of courage, even the smallest bits, there’s an antidote for this condition – something you might never consider: share the courage you do have.

Instead of turning away from something or someone who needs more of us that we think we can give, take a moment and listen more deeply. This applies as much to oters as it does to ourselves.

Listen to yourself and wonder what is making you move away. Listen for what is possible and what someone might not be seeing about what is possible for them. Inquire of yourself what is causing fear?

Next, remember the courage you have had in the past. Courage that many others might not have shown in similar circumstances.

A friend called me the other night to tell me about a ridiculous circumstance where one of her kids was told he probably wouldn’t graduate because he hadn’t handed in some of his work.

After many questions, it turned out that there was only one assignment and the completion of that was negotiated. Throughout the whole situation, this boy whether intentionally or unintentionally was treated as being purposefully lacking in responsibility. Because the educators present had been good learners in school environments, they never considered how difficult it might be for a child who was on a different learning curve. A child who had feelings of frustration, felt he was stupid, and maybe even worthless. It’s hard to hold your head up when you feel like this.

Her son did an exit interview with his learning support teacher as a final assignment that focused on his experience at his high school.  He expressed all of his doubts and frustrations with himself and his difficulty in learning at school. The one thing that saved him was getting into an auto repair program- not everyone at that school was asleep. Reading it, his mother cried.

Most of his teachers never stopped to see that he was a child who learned with his hands, it never occurred to them that success is getting the A to some but can have many different meanings to others. It never entered their heads that it might be a good idea to help this young man find his gifts and for them to find ways to appreciate them although they were different than their own. They stepped away from all of the possibilities for a life well-lived and chose, instead to default to criticism noticing everything he lacked.

Many years ago, PBS made a film called How Difficult Can This Be? The F.A.T. City Workshop – F.A.T. stood for frustration, anxiety and tension caused by the existence of different learning styles.

They filled a classroom with teachers, counselors, reading specialists, and other educational professionals. They were given a lesson to do but the materials that they worked on were made to look like they looked to children with learning disabilities. After a very short time, many of these participants were in tears. For the first time, they started to realize how difficult it is to be in a class when you learn differently than the others.

Today, when you find yourself telling someone you don’t have enough time, or money, or knowledge or connections, maybe you could listen a little longer. Maybe you could share the courage you have today with someone who might need to borrow a little for the time being. You aren’t committing to a lifetime of support – really just a few extra minutes – your choice.

Each of us has the chance to make an immense impact on other lives every single day. When you choose to believe this, you find courage you didn’t know you had, your awareness grows and things take on a more brilliant hue.

7 Important Facebook Privacy Settings to Change Right Now – HowToGeek

HowToGeek provides great tips for maintaining your privacy on Facebook. To read the full article visit their page here.

Facebook’s long list of privacy options can seem daunting, but there are only a few settings that you need to change to better protect yourself. Here are some things you should check right now.

While most of these settings can be changed via the Facebook app on iPhone and Android, the settings themselves may be presented slightly differently when accessed from the app.

Delist Your Profile from Search Engines

If you don’t want your Facebook profile potentially appearing when someone searches for your name, you should instruct Facebook to delist it from search engines. This tells the search engine not to index the page, but this might take a short while to take effect.

Make Your Friends List Private

By default, your friends list is visible to everyone, including to people you are not friends with. Having a list of your friends might help people find you, and not everyone is comfortable with this. You probably don’t want Joe Public to be able to look up a list of your close friends, family members, or romantic partners.

Restrict Visibility of Your Older Posts En Masse

If you initially made your Facebook account back when it was an invite-only college network or shortly after the service opened up to everyone, you might have forgotten about some embarrassing older public posts that you made.

Enable Timeline Review

By default, anyone can tag you in a post and it’s added to your Facebook Timeline, right on your profile alongside the updates that you’ve authored yourself. This happens for both posts (like someone tagging you because you met up for a coffee) and photos.

Disable Facial Recognition

Facial recognition has some upsides on Facebook, but not everyone is comfortable with it. With facial recognition enabled, Facebook might suggest you as a tag when a friend uploads a photo, or make suggestions on your own photo tags.

Preview How Others See Your Profile

Facebook allows you to see how your Facebook profile appears to other people. This allows you to view what information you have left on display for the public to see.

Any runners out there? Today is your day – it’s National Running Day! The CK Daily – The Value in Actual Conversations

Happy Wednesday CK Fam!!

A short week can be a little hectic but grateful for what the long weekend signified, as Rebecca mentioned in yesterday’s message.

Our family gets together at our family cemetery, and we do a big fish fry. We all catch up on each other’s lives and meet new friends and extended family members. We also do a yearly softball game that brings out the best and worst of our distant cousins, haha!

The best part though? No one is face down in their phones for any noticeable amount of time. I brought this up in May, but I received a reply from a subscriber and I wanted to share some practices to make the most of your time with family members, even in the immediate household.

She shared that they do a “No Tech at the Table” – which is for the duration of dinner, they sit, eat, and converse with one another to catch up on life and the happenings of the day. The coolest part? These kids are now 20 & 21 years old. They could easily ignore their parent’s wishes, but setting a good precedent and encouraging real conversation is so valuable in a “Together” but “Alone” society.

If you haven’t seen the “Social Dilemma” on Netflix, it really sheds some light on the issues with social media and accessibility.

Embrace the menial moments with your family and friends. They are limited.

Thanks for tuning in – have a great one!

Corey

Understanding Polarity for MPO – CK Learning Center

High-end fiber optics are important to modern networking, but they’re a lot more complicated than some of their older counterparts. If you need the power of fiber, you might be looking into MPO systems. They can hit some of the highest speeds on the market today, but utilizing them requires knowledge. One key piece of knowledge that can help with MPO systems is polarity. Without this knowledge, you won’t get a connection across any of your lines.

What is MPO?

Multi-fiber push on cables are pre-terminated cables that are designed for very high bandwidth. They start at 12-fiber cables that communicate at 10 Gbps. More advanced MPO cables utilize 24-fiber design and can achieve 40/100 Gbps connections. MPO cables are designed for plug and play, they are compact and they are extremely common in data centers. The massive increase in internet capacity over the last decade has involved the use of MPO systems all over the place.

What is Polarity?

When it comes to using MPO systems, an issue of polarity arises. Generally speaking, polarity refers to the direction of flow. If you think about magnets, the polarity of the magnet tells you which way the field flows, and that tells you the direction of attraction or repulsion you would get with another magnet. It also determines the direction of an induced electric current, but let’s not wander too far into the weeds.

In fiber optics, polarity refers to the flow of information. In a simple duplex system, information flows from a transmitter (TX) to a receiver (Rx). Since a duplex system has fiber pairs, there are two possible ways to line up the Tx and Rx pair. Only one will work. The standard is that the A strand of one side needs to align with the B strand of the other side. If you match A-A, then no communication occurs. This is the basic idea of fiber polarity.

When you’re utilizing 12- or 24-strand MPO systems, polarity gets a lot more common. That’s why we refer to a standardized methodology to assure proper polarity.

The CK Daily – Memorial Day Weekend

Happy Tuesday! This weekend was super busy around here. My nephew is turning 7 this week and we celebrated on Saturday. His party was a blast! He has always been one that’s an excellent gift opener… He gets so excited and so animated that it’s honestly just a joy to watch him react to each present. He was genuinely excited and thankful for everything he got. It was a great birthday!

I spent Sunday doing a lot of chores around the house, and then I had the family over on Monday for a little Memorial Day cookout. I always find myself with such conflicting emotions on Memorial Day. I do love that people spend the weekend getting together with friends and family. In this fast-paced world, we can all use a little break and downtime to just hang out and enjoy the company of those we love. It certainly feels like the unofficial kickoff to Summer which is exciting.

That said, the reality of Memorial Day is that it’s a solemn holiday. It’s a time for us to stop and remember that the freedom we enjoy comes at an immeasurable cost. As cliché as it sounds, freedom isn’t free. One day of remembering our fallen soldiers seems so inadequate, but I hope that everyone did take some time to reflect, remember, and honor those brave men and women who paid the ultimate price so that we can live freely. Although I can never repay them, I’ll forever be grateful and hope to never take for granted this life that I get to enjoy because others were willing to pay it all.

What is a Cat8 Ethernet Cable and How is it Different? – CK Learning Center

What is a Cat8 Ethernet Cable?

We were told that Ethernet was going to be a thing of the past. Google tried to make fiber optics the new standard for home internet connections, and it was an obvious choice for scaling industrial applications. Somehow, Ethernet has hung in there, and new iterations arise every few years that continue to push the envelope of traditional copper wires. Today, we’re going to cover the latest iteration: Cat8. We’re going to start with the basics, but in a few short minutes, you’ll have a clear picture of what Cat8 is, how it works and why you need to be thinking about it.

Differences Between Ethernet Categories

You’ve seen the “cat” or category designations, Cat5e and Cat6 and Cat6a, plenty. If you work in more powerful internet settings you might even be familiar with Cat7. The general rule is that a higher number is a newer technology and can support higher data rates, but that’s just one of the main differences:

– Standard bandwidth (measured in MHz)

– Maximum data rate (measured in megabits per second)

– Shielding

Basic Specs for Cat8 Ethernet

Cat5 operates at 100 MHz and can transfer data at speeds up to 1000 Mbps. Cat6 works at 250 MHz and can get up to 1 Gbps. Cat7 ups the ante substantially with 600 MHz and 10 Gbps rates. This is a simplification. There are variations on each cable and some arrangements can boost or inhibit performance, but these are the numbers for which each category is tested and vetted.

The reason Cat8 is turning heads is because it is jumping several iterations in performance. It uses 2 Ghz signals to move data from 25 Gbps (Cat8.1) to 40 Gbps (Cat8.2). It’s a serious upgrade, and the implications are turning heads across IT fields.

Why Does Cat8 Ethernet Cost More?

In most things, higher performance costs more money. Sometimes that’s a purely economic issue (supply and demand or something like that), but in other cases it has to do with the cost of production. That certainly applies to Ethernet cables. Cat5 isn’t cheaper because it is slower. It is slower because it is cheaper. We’ll get into it more in a minute, but higher frequencies allow for higher data transmission rates, but making them is more expensive.

Mostly, it boils down to twists and shielding. Higher frequencies require more twists in the cable pairs, and that process is more expensive. Also, it becomes increasingly difficult to shield higher frequencies from interference and crosstalk, and as you go up in scale, the cost of raw materials for shielding get pricey. Cat7, for example, often uses gold plates for shielding. Since interference can render a cable useless, this is a big deal. With Cat8, one of the popular and most trusted types of shielding is S/FTP. This is usually established by having each pair shielded with a foil wrapping and then a 4-pair braid shield around the group of wires. This gives the maximum level of protection from interference and is found in the highest performance copper cables.

Standard Bandwidth Explained

Since standard bandwidth is such a driving force in cable design, let’s talk about how frequency really works. Essentially, the frequency of a cable determines how many 1s and 0s can be sent across the wires in a second. For basic Cat5 cables, that’s 100 million signals a second (or 100 Mhz). Cat8 uses an unprecedented 2 billion (2 GHz) signals per second. This means the cable density and quality of shielding necessary to make it work are on a whole different scale. That’s obvious when you consider that Cat8 is rated for data transfers 250 to 400 times faster than Cat5.

Cat8 Ethernet is still not widely available (we do have it available!), but the demand is already strong. Data centers are itching for a scalable copper cable that can compete with fiber optics. With the rise of data transmission due to the exponential increase in the volume of data stored, the rapid centralization of data to the cloud, and the ever increasing bandwidth available through broadband and 5G network hardware manufacturers, IT managers, and Data center engineers are constantly looking for quick, easy, and cheaper ways of moving more data. Outside of fiber, CAT8 is the new “go-to” cabling solution. Basically, any operation that needs to scale fiber optics might be looking to substitute Cat8 instead over the next few years.

Happy Friday & Happy National Road Trip Day! Today is the perfect day to pack up, fuel up, stock up, crank up the tunes, and hit the road! What are your weekend road trip plans?

The CK Daily – Thank you!

Happy Friday! I’m sure I’m not the only one who is looking forward to a long weekend. I’m excited to spend time with friends and family around the pool and grilling some sort of meat (maybe multiple types of meat, haha). As we can enjoy this long weekend, I would encourage us not to forget why we’re celebrating this week. I’m thankful for those we honor on this Memorial Day weekend!

I’m also reminded of a story in the book of Joshua. After the Israelites cross the Jordan River, God instructed them to set up a memorial using 12 stones declaring the mighty works of God. Memorials are a powerful reminder of where we came from.

What is a way that you remember an important milestone in your life?

Chris

7 Tips for Dealing with Uncertainty – Success Blog

1. Uncertainty is never permanent.

Or better put, uncertainty is always temporary.

No matter what you’re going through, this period of crisis will pass. No matter how long ago March 2020 feels, we all know that at some point our lives will return to normal. Although we don’t know when that will happen, it’s comforting to know that every stressful season of uncertainty is temporary. Hold on to the knowledge that the stress and anxiety has an expiration date, regardless of how acute it feels today.

2. Predictability = safety + security.

In order to feel like we are in control, we need two things: safety and security. Without either, our lives tend to feel like they’re spiraling. That’s why 2020 felt so chaotic and traumatic for so many; our daily routines and coping mechanisms were stripped away because of safety concerns. Without our typical fallbacks, we felt insecure. And for obvious reasons, many of us did not feel safe all year.

3. Hold space for negative emotions.

PSA: It is absolutely OK to not be OK.

Sometimes, it’s absolutely necessary to not feel OK.

We as a culture have a problem with toxic positivity. We love to airbrush over troubled times and pretend that everything is peachy keen, even as the world as we know it is crumbling around us. Thanks, Instagram!

Combat this urge to gloss over the ugly emotions by embracing them. Give them a name. Understand them. Ask them to come inside and offer them a warm beverage and a salty snack. Welcome them with curiosity and compassion. And once you get to know them, release them back to where they came from.

4. Accept your reality.

During times of acute uncertainty, it’s almost instinctual to wish for easier times. We love to recreate reality in our imagination in order to cope.

But we can’t change our reality. And when the dissonance between what we wish was reality and what is actually reality comes to a head, it’s easy to feel despondent and depressed.

Don’t set yourself up for failure. Instead, accept the reality of whatever situation you’re in and work to adapt to that. If you continue to force a false narrative on yourself, you’ll spin your wheels until you are forced to surrender. Instead, get creative within your reality.

5. Simplify your life.

“Michael always says ‘K-I-S-S. Keep it simple, stupid.’ Great advice. Hurts my feelings every time.”  –Dwight Schrute

Great show. Great line.

Take it from Michael Scott—If you try to overwhelm yourself with the complexities of life during any time of uncertainty, you’re just piling it on yourself for absolutely no reason.

Go back to the basics. What do you need to accomplish today? You probably need to get out of bed, feed yourself, clean yourself, clothe yourself, do your job (whatever that entails), take time for yourself, connect with others and sleep.

6. Set yourself up for success.

Humans love progression. We like feeling in control of our situations, and we like seeing growth happening right before our eyes. So one of the easiest ways to feel better about yourself during times of acute uncertainty, is to create small actionable goals for yourself to cross off a list.

7. Practice self-care.

Self-care can be defined as anything you do to rest, reset or reflect. At its best, self-care is used to refill your cup. We all need to nourish ourselves and our energy, and the best and fastest way to do this is to engage in self-care.

However, self-care is typically the first thing that goes out the window during times of crisis.

We decide we have to focus on everything else—our jobs, our finances, our families, and our friends. But without caring for ourselves first, the rest of these will inevitably suffer.

Even though it feels impossible, carve out time for yourself.
