A Psalm for Giving Thanks | Goggles & Shoe Covers | 2960 Series Switches | Micromanagers Part 2 | News to Start Your Day

Happy Tuesday!

(November 24th is National Sardines Day…seriously, that is it. Nothing else. Nov 24th doesn’t get much love, well, unless you like sardines.)

Happy Tuesday before Thanksgiving, you guys! I am looking forward to a few days off to spend with family and relaxing. I try to focus in November, and particularly the week of Thanksgiving, on things I am thankful for. At the top of the list for me is my relationship with Jesus. He freely gives me what I need and is my source of strength. One of the ways I walk with Him is by reading the Bible.

Are you familiar with the book of Psalms? It is a collection of poems, songs, praises, thanksgivings and more, with the majority of the collection of 150 being written by King David. Other psalmists include Moses and Solomon.

Here’s an overview of the book if you’re interested: The Book of Psalms

I read this one, Psalm 100, yesterday with the kids. I am grateful for the Lord’s love and faithfulness!

Psalm 100: A Psalm for giving thanks

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth!

Serve the Lord with gladness!

Come into his presence with singing!

Know that the Lord, he is God!

It is he who made us, and we are his;

we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving,

and his courts with praise!

Give thanks to him; bless his name!

For the Lord is good;

his steadfast love endures forever,

and his faithfulness to all generations.

There have been many songs written about this psalm over the years, some just setting the words to music. Here’s a contemporary song based on it by Chris Tomlin if you’d like to listen: Psalm 100 – Chris Tomlin

What are you thankful for today?

Handle Others with Your Heart | Spiffy Face Masks | QSFP Transceivers | Micromanagers Part 1 | News to Start Your Day

Happy Monday! (First day of a holiday week!)

(November 23rd is National Cashew Day, National Eat A Cranberry Day, and National Espresso Day…Take your pick and enjoy!)

To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart. – Eleanor Roosevelt

I came across this quote this past weekend, and I thought it was a good sentiment for leading into a holiday filled with togetherness and extra family time. The love and care we have for family or close friends means we are sometimes left vulnerable to frustration and hurt because our hearts are open and exposed. Just going away from home and getting out of a routine can be difficult for me. I’m a homebody. I also recharge in quiet spaces. I’ve learned that I do better with family holidays away from home with a little mental preparation.

Maybe some of you can relate to mentally preparing to be surrounded by people, and I’m sure others of you are more like my husband. He is energized by travel, being around lots of people and doing something different. No matter where you fall on the introvert/extrovert, homebody/adventure seeking scale, it is important to use your heart when dealing with others.

Compassion, grace, understanding, love, thankfulness.

I pray each of you is able to give and receive these things this Thanksgiving whether you are able to spend the day with extended family, friends, or only with your own immediate family.

Christin

Today’s Thanksgiving Recipe is from one of my favorite influencer blogs. I follow this couple’s work, mostly for their home design content, but I also have started trying out some of his recipes. I am looking forward to trying this stuffed turkey breast. The recipe for it is below. Be sure to check out the entire meal as well: lowkey Thanksgiving for four.

Mixing things up! | Disinfecting Wipes Update | Important Announcements | News to Start Your Day

Its Friday! We made it!

(November is National Absurdity Day! There’s no limit to the wackiness of this holiday so have fun! Speaking of absurd…did you see that Krispy Kreme has two dozen donuts for $13 today only. Link in the news section.)

It looks like our map of favorite Thanksgiving sides by state didn’t get linked yesterday. So sorry about that! Let’s try again: Favorite Thanksgiving Side by State Map

Wednesday was a “in a funk” kind of day for me. I had my usual schedule of homeschool and work, but I also had a test at the eye doctor and the kids joined me. It isn’t unusual for me to feel pulled in several different directions at once, but for whatever reason, I just didn’t feel like managing the chaos. Knowing I had to employ some of my Level 2 and 3 coping skills to get through the day, I decided I needed to mix things up yesterday. I went alone to take some books back to the library, drop some packages at the post office, and then I had lunch by myself in our cute little downtown area. Just getting out of the house felt great and taking some time alone gave me a better perspective and more cheerful attitude.

We owned a salt water fish tank for many years, and one of the things we learned was how to trick the fish into thinking they’d moved areas of the ocean. You just move your rocks and other structures around, and they think they’re somewhere new. We had to employ this technique with clownfish several times. If we added fish, one died, or if there was a shift in power between them, we’d move the rocks to help them reacclimate. Fun fact: Did you know that all clownfish are born male, and the dominate (usually largest) of a group becomes the female? I guess we’re like those clownfish in a way. When we’re stuck in a rut, a simple change of routine can help jump start us back to a new attitude.

So, if you’re feeling down or stuck in some way, I encourage you to get out of the house (or stay in if that’s what is different for you), go for a drive, take a walk in nature, or cook a new meal. Take some time to do something out of the ordinary, preferably something you enjoy, and give your brain and body a reset.

Christin

Thanksgiving Sides | New Dispenser Landing Page | Pandemic Proof IT Careers | News to Start Your Day

Happy Thursday!

(Here’s a fun one for you…November 19th is World Toilet Day! I will speak for all of us when I say that we are all thankful for this invention!)

Just one week until Turkey Day! Someone on our team showed us this map today: Most Popular Thanksgiving Sides by State. I am loving how my favorite dishes are represented. We certainly love our mac and cheese in the south, don’t we? I have to say, I am a little worried about the people in Maine. Favorite dish: side salad. Apparently there is no mac and cheese (or stuffing like so many of the neighboring states enjoy) in Maine? Ha!

What is your favorite Thanksgiving food?

We’ve been working to collect some of our favorite recipes with you. Today I’m sharing this one, which came in from a customer. Thanks so much for sharing with us, Eva!

Thanksgiving Recipes? | PPE Update | VoIP Desk Phones | 5 Consequences of Victim Thinking | News to Start Your Day

Happy Wednesday!

(November 18th is Mickey Mouse Day – as well as Mickey and Minnie’s birthdays – I guess if you are a Disney fan, this is a big day for you!)

It’s Hump Day, friends! The week is halfway over, and we’re just one week away from the beginning of Thanksgiving celebrations. Those celebrations will look different for many people this year. I know it doesn’t feel like we’re nearing the end of the year here yet. The weather is still a bit warmer than usual, there’s still so much to do before the actual end of the year, and everything we do is just a bit unusual. 2020, you know?

One of the things that seems to have the power to bring people together is good food. Time honored recipes that are passed down in families, little secrets to make this pie the best it can be or that pan of stuffing (dressing where I am from) taste just perfect. The comfort we feel eating familiar foods is a powerful tool of community and family. We were thinking it’d be neat to share some of that togetherness with you.

I have a cookbook from my small hometown in south Georgia. It is compiled and sold by a group through the Methodist church there, and my mom bought me one for Christmas one year. I use it a few times a year, when I’m wanting that special nostalgic recipe from home. I know I can find my fifth grade teacher’s special punch recipe when I need it, a recipe (or three) for squash casserole from some of the best cooks I know, or Mrs. Sue’s pound cake recipe in those pages. Just flipping through and seeing the recipes and names of those who shared them brings up fond memories.

So many of you have shared personal things with us since the beginning of this daily email journey. We are hoping you’ll now be willing to share your favorite family recipes. We’ll share them here in the email, add our own family recipes – some are even winners from our annual chili cookoff – and if we get enough, we’ll publish them all into an e-book to share with you all. A CK Community Cookbook, if you will.

If you have a favorite recipe handy that you’d like to share now, just respond and give us the details. We’d love to include your name, city and state as well. We’re working on a link where you can submit them, so if you need a day or two to pull your food-splattered recipe card out (we want the good ones!), be on the lookout for that.

Check out our first submission below!
