CEO Daily Update – 9.4.2020

On the Road Again | Cisco Switches | New Safety Products | Tech News

Happy Friday!

Welcome to the CablesAndKits CEO Update email. Read more about this email by scrolling to the very bottom.

I made it home! I was nearing the house around 7pm I texted the wife before I got to the driveway and her and the girls (4 and 7) were waiting in the yard. I got parked and the girls ran over. I knelt down to give them hugs and kisses … BARELY got any, and they about knocked me down to get in the door of the RV!

They loved the thing and were about to pass out of excitement over their bunk beds – each with a shelf and it’s own TV/DVD player. We had to nearly pry them out of them to go eat dinner. All they could talk about was “can we sleep in it??”. I think there is no way around a front yard camping trip this weekend, haha!

As I mentioned before, we already have a camping trip planned in a couple weeks, and we have another set of friends we are already starting a conversation with about going somewhere too.

In addition to that, while this Motorhome is in near perfect shape to be 10 years old, I have a handful of things I would like to do to it like replacing the radio and speakers, some maintenance items, and minor repairs. I look forward to the projects.

Now that I am home, I cannot wait to get on the road again! Let the fun begin!

I don’t know if it’s true, but I heard …

There is a town in Nebraska called Monowi with a population of one. The only resident is a woman who is the Mayor, Bartender and Librarian.

Working From The Road | Woodchucks? | Hand Sanitizer Blowout | Egalitarian Time

Happy Thursday!

Welcome to the CablesAndKits CEO daily email. Read more about this email by scrolling to the very bottom.

I am still on the journey home. I left Tampa yesterday and got to Tifton, GA last night around 8pm. I got setup, took the car loose and went to get something to eat (so cool!), and got back and to bed! I have an all day CK strategy meeting today that I will do from the camper. Then I’ll make the final leg home where the wife and girls can see the motorhome. I am excited to see what they think!

Check out the Safety Supply deals Joe mentions below. The hand sanitizer is especially of note – we are blowing it out and starting over. Our sanitizer is not from any factory that had methanol issues by the way! Now that people can get sanitizer in every familiar store it’s time for us to clear the shelves and regroup. Oh, and he now has Lysol spray!

I don’t know if it’s true, but I heard …

A wildlife technician, Richard Thomas, took the famous tongue twister, “how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood” and calculated a rough estimate of what the answer would actually be. It came out to be around 700 pounds.

Today’s Product Spotlight from Rerun (AKA Rebecca):

SFP-10G-LR

Today’s product spotlight features a 10G transceiver that we love! The SFP-10G-LR transceiver module was designed for long-range transmission. It supports 10 Gbps data transfer rates over a distance of 10 kilometers (that’s 6.2 miles!) using singlemode fiber. This hot-swappable SFP+ transceiver is a fantastic option for satisfying connectivity needs in large data centers, enterprise wiring closets, large campuses, and more!

We offer 3 versions of this module:

  • Cisco Original – Factory Sealed
  • Cisco Original – Refurbished
  • CK Branded (Cisco Compatible) – Factory Sealed

From Joe, our friendly Safety Supplies Product Marketer:

It’s Joe, I’m back! I know I missed a day, but I have enough good news for you guys to make up for it! First, we have another new product on the site! For a while now the only disinfectant spray’s we’ve had are Clorox. Well, we finally have a Lysol option available for you guys! This new Lysol All Purpose Cleaner is perfect for all you’re common household surfaces that require frequent cleaning and disinfecting! When it comes to the size and price this is very comparable to our Clorox Cleanup Spray except it doesn’t contain bleach which I know can be an issue in some situations!

CP-7841-K9 |Clorox | Beliefs, behaviors, and branding | the RV journey home

Happy Wednesday!

Welcome to the CablesAndKits CEO daily email. Read more about this email by scrolling to the very bottom.

The RV Journey home: I decided to drive from Orlando to Tampa Sunday night at 1:30am. The sellers told me that Lazy Days had a camp ground on-site that was amazing. (They are the largest RV dealer in the world, according to themselves). It is a mighty impressive place! I wanted to get the RV washed and waxed and also behold this RV super dealer as well as look at their service offerings in case I need work done in the future and can come to this area.

When I got there I had to disconnect the CRV in the main parking lot before going to the camp site. They have a guard shack 24 hours and they were super helpful to get me a space and even helped me with the car when I discovered the battery had died en route (face palm). There were no jumper cables to be found so we pushed it into a parking spot and I dealt with it the next day.

It is a really cool experience to have an RV at a camp ground and also have a car so you can go exploring, out to eat, etc. I’m digging it!

Today I set out toward home. It’s 8 hours in a car so prob 10+ hours in the RV since you can’t go quite as fast. The plan is to stop somewhere along the way and stay a night and drive the rest of the way the next day.

My girls are beside themselves and I cannot wait to get home and then see their bunks, which is about all they care about lol.

CAB-AC (Standard Power Cord) | Disinfectant Sprays | RV Update

Happy Tuesday!

Welcome to the CablesAndKits CEO daily email. Read more about this email by scrolling to the very bottom.

I did it. I bought the RV in Orlando. It was touch and go for a moment there – I thought the guy was flaking on me. Turns out his back had gone out a few days before and he was in pretty bad pain. He’d not mentioned that before. I was able to share about all my back issues over the last 20 years and give him some guidance which I think he and his wife really appreciated.

Not only did I get the super nice but gently used and affordably priced motorhome, I was also able to buy his 2012 CRV that was already rigged up as a tow vehicle. So now we are really set to hit the road!

For those camping folks out there that have been emailing me, here are the details …

2010 Tiffin Allegro Open Road 35QBA. Front engine diesel on Freightliner chassis which was a special option. Not many of them out there. That’s the main thing that sold me on this one at first. Perfectly clean and almost no blemishes. $67k, which is a steal for such a nice motorhome.

2012 Honda CRV with 80k miles, already setup to tow – $7k! What?!

I am beyond happy and excited for the family. We already have a camping trip planned in a couple of weeks with someone from CK and his family!

Now for the trip home!

Hand Sanitizer Blowout | The RV adventure continues | Cisco RCKMNT-1RU Rack Kit

Happy Monday!

Welcome to the CablesAndKits CEO daily email. Read more about this email by scrolling to the very bottom.

Well I’ve had quite an adventure in the last few days, and particularly Sunday. I’ve continued my hunt of a motorhome and settled on a couple brands and models within a certain age and miles range. I found what seemed to be the perfect unit at a fantastic price that was a few hours away. I called and had a great conversation with the owner and ended up going to look at it last Wednesday. While I expected to need to do some repairs, the quantity of them really started to pile up fast. It was a good bit below market value – way more than the repairs would cost, so I kept pondering on it.

I was nearly willing to pull the trigger when I saw the exact same unit on RVTrader for a tad more money but without all the issues. It had a little wrong here and there but it was being offered by a dealer and they were going to make the repairs. Great! It was in Utah though, which is a 28 hour drive in a normal car, so quite a long trip in an RV but I thought ”hey, a person buying a motorhome had better be willing to drive distances!” Ha.

I haggled a deal by phone, and got them to agree to let me sleep in the RV for a night when I arrived. They said they’d never had anyone ask that before and that I’d be locked in the fence with the guard dog. Sounded cool to me!

I booked my flight on Sat afternoon for Sunday evening. I planned to fly out at 8pm, arrive at 10pm with the time change, grab a hotel, and then head over Monday to begin my inspection and overnight stay.

My wife had been resistant to this whole plan until I made an executive family decision to get one, and said that if we hated it we could sell. After that she started pondering the whole thing and next thing I know she is showing me yet another unit on RVTrader late Sat night. It was even BETTER than the one in UT. It was even more than the previous one but was worth the difference hands down. Trouble is I’d already put down a $1000 non-refundable deposit and bought a plane ticket to Utah.

Nevertheless, it was better enough that it was worth exploring. And, it was in Florida – much closer! I spoke with the owner Sun afternoon and told him I had a one way ticket to UT that NIGHT. He told me everything I needed to know, described all the updates that had been done, and even had a pull behind SUV for sale as well, which we also wanted. The fact that it was already setup and ready to go was a huge bonus.

We started haggling price via text and there were long delays between responses. I figured he was pondering or talking to his wife but it turned out he was on business calls (on a Sunday?). We still were not talking the same language on price and I was already driving to the airport. I texted that I would change my flight from Salt Lake to Orlando if we could agree. We were close on price so I went ahead and asked if he’d mind if I diverted my flight to Orlando.

He didn’t reply quickly, but I was half way to the airport and needed to make a decision. I decided to take a chance and change my flight to Orlando. I’d deal with the deposit / Salt Lake unit later. I pulled up the delta app to look for a change flight option. “Your upcoming flight will allow check in 24 hours prior to departure”. Wait, what? I HAD BOOKED THE FLIGHT IN OCT!!

Granny’s Biscuits |USB Console Cable | Sanitizer Dispenser Price Drop | Tech News

Happy Friday!

Welcome to the CablesAndKits CEO daily email. Read more about this email by scrolling to the very bottom.

I don’t know if it’s true, but I heard …

Johnny Cash took only three voice lessons before his teacher advised him to stop taking lessons and to never deviate from his natural voice.

Do you remember the old HBO movie intro? Back in the 80’s when I was a kid my brother would turn a movie on and this would play. I remember watching this opening scene like it was yesterday! I especially loved the part where the colorful lines move around the edge of the O.

Sometimes we want things to be the way they were before. Simpler. Videos like this remind me of what it was like when I was a kid and didn’t have the worries of today. It reminds me of where I was at the very instant I saw it the first time. I was roughly 6 years old, and in the lap of my “granny” (great grand mother) who was around 92 at the time. She had a rocker that she always sat in that was in front of the TV. I remember sitting there with her many times watching The Price is Right, and even Days of our Lives – until I got bored with it and ran off to do something else. But Bob Barker sure could keep my attention! Especially when they played Plinko!

We didn’t even have HBO. This was back in the day of the cable boxes with the turn dial. My brother, who is 8 years older than me, had figured out that if you stuck a piece of cardboard behind the dial, turned the channel between HBO and whatever was next to it, and SMACKED the side of the box, HBO would come in crystal clear! As a 6 year old I was pretty amazed at this magic.

I remember the azaleas in my granny’s front yard, and the white rocks that I had never seen anywhere else. I remember the shed in the back yard that we used to climb up on and JUMP off of. You should have seen granny fly! Kidding, hahaha … my and friends and cousins were the ones doing the jumping. I remember the spicket (spigot) in the back yard that I was standing near when I got into a minor fight with some boy – the first and last time I have ever fought anyone (I’ve come close a few times!). I remember my granny making biscuits by hand with no measurements on the bare kitchen counter in her old drafty house with single pane windows and flaking paint.

There was something so simple about it all. Peaceful. Fun. Comforting.

But then things changed. Age 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 …. My granny died. Family members got into a fight and put each other in ICU. My family fractured. I wasn’t allowed to see my grandmother. I got picked on and bullied in school. My mom wouldn’t work and I dropped out of school in 9th grade and got a full time job to eat.

As I got older I realized the world was not all biscuits and azaleas. You toughen up …. some maybe to the point of being closed off, bitter, jaded, cynical, etc.
