Learning Center Article – Best Practices for Data Center Security in 2022

If you looked at data center security best practices only a few years ago, the leading trends and advice would be dramatically different from the leading areas of focus today. Everyone in IT knows that things change fast, but it feels like change has accelerated.

Here’s an example. Network security was the most important thing as recently as 2019. While it’s still paramount, security threats have shifted away from direct attacks. Social engineering and grid stability are actually more important today.

With all of that in mind, there are four up-to-date best practices that can help you think about how things have changed and what you can do to keep up.

  • NASA will unveil potential future landing sites for a human return to the surface of the moon, and you can watch the briefing on Space.com today (Aug. 19), or directly on the space agency’s website. NASA is serious about getting humans back to the moon this decade and has already worked out the most convenient landing sites that will be targeted by the Artemis 3 mission in 2025.
  • For 45 years, NASA’s twin probes Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 have been exploring our solar system and beyond as they currently roam through interstellar space. Despite its name Voyager 2 launched before Voyager 1, when it lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Launch Complex 41 aboard a Titan IIIE-Centaur on Aug. 20, 1977. Voyager 1 followed suit about two weeks later on Sept. 5. While Voyager 1 primarily focused on Jupiter and Saturn, Voyager 2 visited both gas giants and then ventured on to Uranus and Neptune. But the duo didn’t stop there. Voyager 1 officially entered interstellar space on Aug. 25, 2012, while Voyager 2 entered on Nov. 5, 2018. The pair continue to journey through the cosmos and have enough power and fuel to keep scientific instruments running until at least 2025
  • The CDC is investigating a “fast-moving” E. coli outbreak that was identified in Ohio and Michigan, with nearly 30 people infected by the bacteria from an unknown source.
  • Apple has disclosed serious security vulnerabilities for iPhones, iPads and Macs, which could potentially allow attackers to take complete control of devices. Apple added that it is “aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited”.

The CK Daily – Learning to be Flexible

Happy Thursday morning, everyone!

Ever had one of those weeks where you had everything planned out and it looked like everything was going to fall into place and then “BOOM” one thing happens and it sets off a chain reaction and throughs off your whole week…even the small things? Yeah, that about sums up my week this week. It’s been a great week but nothing (and I do mean nothing) has gone the way I had planned it at the beginning of the week. My mom tested positive for covid then my brother tested positive for covid this week, so that threw off some of the things that they had to have done which fell to me to have to take care of those things for them, which threw off the things that I needed done and so on and so on…

Flexibility is the key! I don’t like it sometimes, but that is just life I guess. Haha! But seriously, I used to get all worked up and frustrated when things didn’t go as planned or things and time being out of place. It would throw me off and I hated feeling that way. (That is one of my OCD quirks…everything has its place and order. I know there are others out there that deal with this that completely understand where I am coming from.) But, over there years, I have learned to go with the flow. Control what I can and make the best of what I can’t control. No sense in getting worked up, upset, or angry over stuff I can’t control. If I do that, I can’t think clearly enough to handle the curveball and make the best decision for the situation. Not easy all the time, like this week, but it is a part of life.

I hope the rest of your week and weekend go smoothly and “as planned”. I am planning on making the best of the rest of my week and I hope you do as well.

Jason

Learning Center Article – Difference between FCoE and FCIP

For enterprise operations, data management is an essential operation, and it requires powerful, robust designs in order to meet demand. That is why storage area networks (SAN) are so common. With SAN, you will often find that multiple types of connections are necessary to serve every need of the system, so you will be working with copper connections and fiber optics simultaneously. When those different infrastructures need to communicate, you need methods that bridge the gap.

When it comes to building connections between fiber channels and Ethernet, you have a few different options. Two of them are FCoE and FCIP. These represent dramatically different approaches to creating and maintaining cross-system communications, and it’s important to understand each of them in order to inform any networking decisions you make down the line.

The CK Daily – A year of celebrations!

Happy Wednesday!

This weekend was bittersweet in many ways. My little brother ended the week playing in his last first game as a high school senior. I can not believe I am even typing that. I remember the day he was born so clearly, it feels like it was just yesterday! The Lego-loving, Phineas and Ferb watching, Nemo’s biggest fan is grown. 🥺 He played an incredible game and I’m looking forward to watching him continue to grow this season.

We also ended the weekend kicking off an 18-day countdown until he’s 18! I can’t even believe he’s been driving for 2 years. It’s going to be a big year for our family celebrating many “lasts” and praying for him in his decision of where he wants to go to college.

Hope you have a great rest of your week!

Ashley

Learning Center Article – Why would you use shielded Ethernet Cables?

Currently, the use of high bandwidth applications has been on the rise, and network systems have started venturing into factory environments which have called for the use of shielded cables. In this new installation sector, the cable is used in areas with high electromagnetic interference (EMI). Even with improved ability to reject noise and handle gigabit Ethernet, these cables will not function properly in areas where there is high EMI if not properly shielded. A shielded cable will help in these high EMI installations ensuring safe and efficient data transfer.

The CK Daily – Home Cooked Meals

Good Morning & Happy Tuesday!

Hope everyone is having a great start to the week! I don’t know about you, but over the past year or so I’ve found myself eating at home a lot more than I used to. There are a lot of benefits to doing so as it’s generally cheaper, you can control what ingredients you use, and you can literally make whatever you want! On the flip side, it’s time-consuming, requires a good bit of thought on the front end so you can shop for your ingredients, and it’s easy to get into a rut of making the same recipes over and over! I’m definitely in the “rut” phase right now. I’ve been searching Pinterest for some fun new recipe ideas to try and have found a few that look promising, but I’m still searching for a few more!

Do you have any favorite go-to recipes that you love? I’d love to know what some of your tried-and-true favorites are!

Used to mount network and telecom equipment into standard equipment racks. There are two main types of rack screws. 10-32 or 12-24. The 12-24 screws account for most applications in the field today. These particular screws have an E-Z start shank. This type of shank is void of threads for the first few “rounds” at the bottom. This allows easy insertion of the screw without having to get it “started” first.

Learning Center Article – All About 100G Transceivers and Uses in Data Centers

As networking continues to evolve, it has become apparent that data centers are going to do all of the heavy lifting, regardless of who the network serves. In fact, that’s already the case. Networking hubs handle virtually all digital traffic before requests eventually filter down to individual users. Because of this, data center networking is only going to demand more from its hardware and design. Meeting the needs today and tomorrow will require 100G transceivers. This guide was designed to help you better understand and navigate the world of these transceivers.

The CK Daily – Feelings of Nostalgia

Happy Monday!

The weekend passed by like a blur! My oldest will be turning 8 soon and we’ve been planning and preparing for a birthday party at Skate Country a local skating rink. I find skating rinks fascinating as they seem to be timeless – like the music may have some changes, but the overall experience and feel remains the same. It’s also a multi-generational activity. For me it’s a bit nostalgic too and a reminder of the good old days (even though those good old days just change with each passing generation). Something about the smell of the concession stand, the blasting music, and the lights just transport me back to the 90s when my parents would drop me off at the skating rink and I’d just hang out with my friends and skate for a few hours.

I wonder if there are other experiences like that, like maybe walking into a bakery or something. What activities trigger your nostalgia?

I hope you guys have a great week!

Cris

The Cisco original 40G QSFP+ modules are some of the most popular on the market today and are comparable to their popular 10G counterpart, SFP-10G-SR. These 40GBase-SR4 modules are parallel optic transceivers that are ideal for short-range reaches. These transceivers utilize MPO/MTP connectors, operate on OM3 or OM4 multimode fiber (MMF), and use 850nm lasers. These modules utilize 8 of the 12 MPO/MTP fibers to transmit data over 4 duplex (4 sending and 4 receiving) parallel channels at a rate of 10Gbps/channel resulting in 40Gbps speeds. In addition, these modules can be used in a 4x10G mode which allows the module to be compatible with existing 10G transceivers. 40GBase-SR4 modules can reach lengths of up to 100m over OM3 and 150m over OM4 fiber cable.

Learning Center Article – PVC vs LSZH vs OFNP vs OFNR Cable Jackets

When comparing fiber optics cables, there are a lot of different components and considerations. One important component is the outer jacket of the cable. Outer jackets can be made from a number of materials, and generally speaking, the jacket materials can work with any fiber cable type. That means that choosing the right cable jacket is often independent of choosing the fiber setup.

The CK Daily – How are the economic changes impacting you?

Happy Friday, folks! We’re halfway through August, which means college football is just a few weeks away. I’m sure someone from our team will cover college football in the coming weeks. Today, I want to ask you how you react to the recent changes.

There have been many changes lately: the feds raised interest rates, recession talk, layoffs, the stock market is a rollercoaster, etc. These topics can create fear in us IF we let it. While we cannot control the events, we can control how we react to the situation. I want to remind us none of these topics is a surprise to God. He told us in 1 Peter 5:7 to “cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

Have a great weekend!

Learning Center Article – What does 5G mean for business networks?

There is a lot of technology generating excitement for more applications than we could hope to name. One central theme to virtually all of that technology is an increased demand for data and the need for higher bandwidth for connectivity. More devices than ever are actively communicating, and they are placing massive burdens on existing infrastructure.

Copper networks and 4G wireless have a shelf life. Within the next couple of years, they will no longer be able to service standard demands — much less cutting-edge applications. Ultimately, we all need a network that is built for the new age of connectivity. That network will run on 5G.
