CK Daily – 09.22.2022

September 22, 2022 by CablesAndKits

Happy Thursday & Happy 1st Day of Fall! Who’s ready for all things pumpkin spice, a warm mug of apple cider, camp fires, apple picking, pie baking and much more?! 🙋‍♀️

In This Issue: Remember, you’re not alone. | Cisco 1000BASE-T SFP Module – 25% off! | Cat7 Ethernet: Beginning & End | News to Start Your Day

The CK Daily – Remember, you’re not alone.

If you have read any of my CK Daily posts in the past, you know I am usually an open book. I am just like that…I promise I do have a filter but sometimes you just feel led to share and be vulnerable. This week is one of those weeks.

For as long as I can remember, I have struggled with some form anxiety. I know I have mentioned it briefly before in some of my posts. Anxiety is a personal thing for anyone who deals with it, and it comes in all sizes and flavors at different times. No other person can completely understand what a person is feeling when they have an “attack”. You can go from completely functioning to debilitating anxiety in less than 30 seconds. For me, once the spiral starts, if I don’t catch it right at the beginning (with years and years of understanding my triggers) I usually start shutting down quickly.

One day this week was one of those times where I wasn’t able to reign it in and the shutdown happened. I could not get control of my thoughts, nothing I did worked to distract myself, and the “spiral” happened. One of those times that even praying about it and going through the recovery actions didn’t seem to be working. One thought built on another thought and then another and then another (If you know, you know). I haven’t had one of those moments in a very long time. The thing that made it feel even more defeating for me was that I had just started coming off my medicine not too long ago…and of course, that built frustration on top of the anxiety episode.

I felt like my mind was kicking me and taking my lunch money while I was already down. Thankfully, I have built a very understanding group of friends around me that have experienced my episodes and know that I sometimes just need someone to listen and walk with me through it instead of trying to fix it (even at 2:00 am in the morning). They were probably thankful that I finally wore my mind out and exhausted myself enough to where my thoughts slowed down for me to start unraveling the spiral.

I share all this not to wear my feelings on my sleeve, but to remind anyone out there who might be dealing with anxiety…any form or level of it…you are not alone. It is a battle, but the one thing I have learned is that it is a battle we do NOT have to face alone. Medicine is not a bad thing. Talking with a counselor is not a bad thing. Having a support group is not a bad thing. Getting help is not a bad thing. Do whatever you need to do to take care of yourself mentally, emotionally, and physically. You are worth it.

If you deal with anxiety, please know that I will be praying for you. Again, no one can understand what YOU are going through personally, but support is a HUGE thing.

I hope everyone has an awesome rest of the week and weekend. Go do something relaxing and fun, and make it the best for you.

Jason

Learning Center Article – Cat7 Ethernet: Beginning & End

Ethernet has been a staple in networking for decades. When copper cables can provide enough throughput, they tend to be much cheaper and easier to use than other connection types. Ethernet is the king of simplicity, and that’s a major part of why it is so popular.

Over the many years of Ethernet’s use, it has seen incremental improvements and upgrades. As internet access expanded in the 90s and 2000s, many home networks started off with Cat5 cabling. For faster networks, Cat6 was frequently chosen. Today, you will see that even in data centers Cat8 is a good choice. But, you won’t often see Cat7 cables anywhere. Why is that?

The CK Daily – Fall Festivals are Here!

Happy Friday, folks! Tomorrow marks the first official day of Fall. Football season is in full force, our temperatures are cooling off, and it’s fall festival season!

There are lots of fall events in our area that we’ll be visiting over the next several weeks. I enjoy walking through booths to see what locals create and trying new (mostly fried) foods! One of my favorite fall foods to eat is pumpkin pie. 🥧 I know pumpkin pies can be made any time of the year, but eating them in any other season doesn’t seem right. 😀

What fall activities are on your list? If you’re in the Atlanta area, here is a list of 60+ fall events.

And here is a fun, upbeat song from Earth, Wind & Fire – September to get your day going.

Have a great weekend!

Chris

The CK Daily – It’s Bristol Baby!

Good morning and happy Wednesday! What a week it’s been so far – I’ve had lots of last-minute items popping up this week, but thankful they haven’t made the to-do list too much longer than normal.

This weekend was so fun!! For Father’s Day this year, we gifted my dad tickets to this weekend’s races at Bristol Motor Speedway. We went to the race on Friday night and on Saturday. It was so much fun to watch my dad and my brother watch the race. They love racing and my brother went to school to learn basically how to build a race car from the inside out, so they have such a different perspective on racing than the rest of us did.

After the races were over, one of my brother’s friends he went to school with who joined us for the weekend said “Well it was a good race! There was good racing going on everywhere you looked.” And it was true! It was a good weekend of enjoying time with family and good racing both nights.

Also, fun fact! One of our CK Team members, Sue, has a son in the pit crew of one of the teams. We were lucky enough to get pit passes and were able to snag a photo with him!

Have a great rest of the week!

Ashley

Learning Center Article – Choosing the Right Network Card

When you think about networking, there’s a lot of focus on switches, panels, racks, cables, and the backbone infrastructure that makes it all work.

It’s easy to forget about devices that enable individual networking components to function. One such case is a network interface card (NIC). They allow your computerized devices to connect to the network, so they’re absolutely essential. Many devices have NICs built into them, which is why they are easy to overlook. But, there are times when you need to purchase NICs. When that happens, this guide will help you choose the right option.

The CK Daily – Georgia’s 7 Wonders

Good Morning & Happy Tuesday! I’m taking a little time off this week to go on a bit of a unique adventure! I’ll be traveling across the state of Georgia in a camper van for the next few days to check out the “7 Natural Wonders” of Georgia!

I actually didn’t know that Georgia had 7 natural wonders until recently, but upon learning this information, I felt compelled to see them all. I mentioned it to a friend who felt the same, and the next thing you know we had a camper van lined up and had decided to make a mission out of seeing all of them in just a few days!

This trip will definitely be taxing as I think we’re in for somewhere around 15 hours of driving in total. We’ll start the trip down in South Georgia at the Okefenokee Swamp and finish in north Georgia checking out Amicalola Falls & Tallulah Gorge! We’ll be staying at Georgia State parks along the way to catch a little rest in between visiting the different locations!

In case you’re interested in what the 7 wonders are, here’s a list!

  • Okefenokee Swamp
  • Radium Springs
  • Providence Canyon
  • Warm Springs
  • Stone Mountain
  • Amicalola Falls
  • Tallulah Gorge

Have you been to any of these? I’d love to know which ones are your favorites!

Learning Center Article – Wiring Ethernet Patch Panels

When you’re building a network, it’s often ideal to use a patch panel to direct cables and organize long Ethernet runs — especially if they go through walls, floors, and/or ceilings. Patch panels make cable management and network organization very easy over long periods of time, but you’ll need to wire the panels in order to put them into your network.

Not to worry, this guide will walk you through the whole process.

The CK Daily – Preparing for Winter

Happy Monday!

I enjoyed some great fall-like weather this weekend and spent time outside and tidying our duck coop/shed. Now is the time I start getting ready for winter (even though it’s months away). We’ve owned ducks and a goose for a number of years now and they are quite entertaining, but a bit high maintenance.

Sometimes at night, we’ll find an eastern kingsnake in their enclosure with a couple of eggs (unbroken) in their stomach. The snakes are pretty much harmless to the ducks, but they do freak the ducks out quite a bit. The snakes are so docile after eating the eggs that I can handle them quite easily and just relocate them. I enjoy having the kingsnakes around because they handle the rodent population and are known to prey on venomous snakes such as copperheads.

As we are getting closer to winter, we’re starting to get our winter preps ready. And over the weekend I was thinking about the concept of cold spares. Have you heard of this before? Essentially you take a duplicate piece of networking equipment that’s exactly identical to the one in production (in use) and have it on a shelf, preconfigured, set up, and ready to go if the equipment in use fails. Refurb products can sometimes be so cost-effective, that purchasing a cold spare might be a great insurance policy for your network for those mission-critical pieces of equipment. It reminds me of the old prepper saying two is one and one is none. Do you have cold spares in your networking closet? What are your backup plans if a mission-critical switch or router fails? I hope you have a great week!

Learning Center Article – Polarity for MPO Cables

High-end fiber optics are important to modern networking, but they’re a lot more complicated than some of their older counterparts. If you need the power of fiber, you might be looking into MPO systems. They can hit some of the highest speeds on the market today, but utilizing them requires knowledge. One key piece of knowledge that can help with MPO systems is polarity. Without this knowledge, you won’t get a connection across any of your lines.
