The CK Daily – Time of Reflection

Good morning CK Family. This week has been heavy personally. I’ve been spending time with family and really celebrating and reflecting on the life of my grandfather. As we prepare our formal “goodbyes” to him, I can’t help but feel at peace with knowing I’ll see him again one day.

During the week of Easter, I spoke about taking time out of your day leading up to Easter to reflect. To find a new way to take time to truly celebrate what He has done for us. This week, I’ve found such value in truly reflecting on some of those days and continuing to dive in deeper. During the week of Easter, I spent some times writing out my prayers for each day and wrote, “How incredible is it that we get to live the life we do or celebrate the life of others because of His sacrifice?” This week, that statement hits home. And while it’s a tough time navigate, I am humbled and truly in awe of the life that each and every one of us get to live day in and day out and the memories we get to make with others.

Did you take time during Easter to uniquely reflect on the sacrifice He has made? How did you take time out of your day to devote to Him?

Not every installation requires a full 6′-7′ equipment rack. When you are mounting just a few pieces of gear, or space is limited, using a smaller more compact rack is the key to getting the job done with the space you have.

This freestanding 12U mount is perfect for labs and SOHO network installations. The rack is big enough to hold 12 1RU units and strong enough to hold up to 75lbs. The black, powder-coated steel frame is angled back to better support the weight of the mounted gear giving it a better center of gravity. This rack is light, weighing in at only 7lbs, and small enough to fit either on top of or below a desk or table.

When space is limited and the install is small, this compact racking solution will fit the bill!

Learning Center Article – How to Choose Ethernet Cables for Gaming

It’s good that you are looking at Ethernet internet options. As a gamer, you likely understand the horror of laggy games. When it comes to home networks and gaming, latency is a huge deal and can make or break your whole experience – and in the game, whether you live, die, or succeed. Latency is always with us; it’s just a matter of how significant it is. Wi-Fi simply isn’t as stable as Ethernet, and it leads to slower effective experiences due to higher chances of interference. Slow internet speeds can ruin the entire game, so you want something that can keep up. At the same time, you don’t want to spend a life’s fortune just on cables.

The good news is that Ethernet has a lot of options for you these days. From Cat5 to Cat8 cables, there is an option out there that matches the performance you want without committing you to too much money out of your pocket.

Today’s News to Start Your Day:

  • Southwest Airlines will temporarily offer travelers free Wi-Fi on certain flights starting this week, part of a test to bring faster internet to more customers. The free Wi-Fi on Southwest will be available from May 4 through June 10 on certain flights in the western U.S.
  • The Hawaii legislature passed a bill Tuesday to raise the state’s minimum wage to $18 per hour by 2028, up from the current $10.10 minimum. The $18 minimum wage would be the highest in the nation, although some states automatically raise their minimum wage to reflect the cost of living. This means areas like California could have a higher minimum wage by 2028 due to inflation.
  • The Labor Department said Tuesday that 4.5 million Americans, or about 3% of the workforce, quit their jobs in March. That’s up from 4.4 million in February and just slightly tops the previous record notched in November. By comparison, pre-pandemic levels typically hovered around 3.6 million. Meanwhile, the number of job openings rose to 11.5 million by the end of March.
  • Some American Airlines customers may be hopping on a bus instead of an airplane for their connecting flight. Starting June 3, Landline will be transporting customers from regional airports in Allentown/Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and Atlantic City, New Jersey, to the carrier’s Philadelphia hub. Landline CEO and co-founder David Sunde said the partnership with American will make travel even more efficient and affordable.

The CK Daily – Beach Time!

Good Morning and Happy Tuesday! I’m back from my trip to Hilton Head and am feeling refreshed! We had a wonderful time at the beach! The weather was absolute perfection – sunny and between 75 and 80 degrees every day. In addition to that, since we’re in that window of time where Spring Breaks are over, but school hasn’t yet released for Summer, the crowds were non-existent. We never had to wait once at a restaurant! Since it was a last minute vacation, I didn’t want to totally disconnect from work so I found time in between all our outdoor fun to get a few things done. It’s funny how a change of scenery can make you so much more productive at work! It was nice to work from the back patio with sunshine and a gentle breeze! Normally I’m ready to get back to “real life” after a week or so of vacation, but this time I would have been happy to stay another week… or two 😉 Hope you are all having a great start to your week!

The CK Daily – Bounce Houses

Happy Monday!

I can’t believe it’s already May, it seems like last month flew by. This weekend there wasn’t much activity to do. My kids went to a birthday party that had a bounce house… and all I can say is whoever invented the concept of the bounce house is a genius! The kids had a blast. According to Wikipedia the bounce house concept was created by an American engineer, John Scurlock. According to his family he was inspired by designing inflatable tent covers for tennis courts. That was back in 1958!

Other than that birthday party not much to report. I am getting over a sinus infection, and our van is getting in the process of getting repaired. I’m hoping to get it back in the next 3 to 4 weeks (apparently parts have been a bit delayed as with all car things). I hope you all have a great day and enjoy the first week of May!

Learning Center Article – How to Calculate Power Consumption for Your Server Room

When it comes to maintaining a server room, there are many balls to juggle. You have to constantly expand the capacity and throughput of the server systems. Demands only ever rise. At the same time, the space inside the room seems to perpetually shrink. Then, the ambient temperature rises, and you draw more and more power.

That last issue is the topic of discussion here. Power draw is one of the most limiting factors when it comes to operating servers and high-end networks. Eventually, you hit a ceiling and don’t have enough power for more expansion. So, as you continue to adapt and redesign your server room, you need to be able to keep track of power consumption. These tips will help you do that.

  • The Supreme Court ruled that the City of Boston violated the Constitution when it refused to fly an explicitly Christian flag outside city hall. The court unanimously ruled that since the city government had allowed other citizens to use the flagpole to express a variety of messages, its rejection of the religious flag violated the freedom of speech.
  • Shares of Amazon and Google parent Alphabet just closed out their steepest monthly drops since the 2008 financial crisis. The internet giants both reported weaker-than-expected quarterly results this week, hurt by a combination of macroeconomic factors, the war in Ukraine and tough comparisons to blowout numbers during the pandemic. Amazon tumbled 23.8% in April, its biggest decline since falling 25.4% in November 2008, the same month that Google plummeted 18.5%. Alphabet had its worst month since that time, dropping 18% in April.
  • Dozens of civilians have been evacuated from Mariupol to both Russia-controlled and Ukraine-controlled territory after weeks under siege. Some have left the Azovstal steelworks, the last hold-out of Ukrainian troops in the strategically significant city. The United Nations confirmed that a “safe passage operation” had begun to evacuate the citizens on Saturday, and that it was involved alongside the Red Cross.
  • Spirit Airlines rejected a $3.6 billion takeover offer from JetBlue Airways after determining it is not a superior proposal to its previous agreement to merge with Frontier Airlines. Under JetBlue’s proposal, Spirit shareholders would receive $33 in cash per common share, a 47% premium to the value of Frontier’s transaction as of April 29 and a 52% premium to Spirit’s stock price as of Feb. 4.
