The CK Daily – Funny Wi-Fi Names 🤪
Happy Friday, folks! I recently upgraded my wireless network equipment to support Wi-Fi 6 and noticed a significant performance improvement!
But performance is not why I’m writing today…network names (or technically an SSID) are the story today.
On the previous equipment, I let my daughters (who were both under 10 at the time) decide what the home and guest network names would be. They wanted Disney-themed names, so I ran with it.
With the upgrade, I wanted new network names for both the home and guest networks. So, I returned to one of my favorite movie franchises, Back to the Future. My home network name is Marty McWi-Fi (a play on the name of the main character in those movies, Marty McFly). Yes, I know this is a techie thing to do!
I thought changing the network name would be a piece of cake. It took me four (yes, 4) hours to change the network name on every device on the network. This family of four has over 40 devices on our network, and about half had to be reset to change the network. Lesson learned! I’ll keep this network name for a LONG time.
But it got me wondering: how many devices do you have on your home network?
Have a great weekend!
Chris

Learning Center Article – TCP vs UDP
Networking, ultimately, is about the communication between computerized devices. Thinking in such simple terms can help you nail design and philosophy elements when you run your own network, and that can translate to faster speeds and better reliability and security.
