The CK Daily – Living on Land (pt. 3 from Craig!)

Previously, I wrote about the origins of the CK Daily, our work during Covid, and my need to take a sabbatical. Then, I discussed taking a five-month sabbatical, which led to me to exiting the day-to-day of CK. Now, on to Part 3.
While away from the daily operations of CK, I found success in land development. It began when my family and I moved into a house on nearly 10 acres in 2019, leading to the sale of the 82-acre property we moved from.
Initially attempting to sell it as one piece, I couldn’t find an interested and capable buyer. I realized that to sell it, I needed to divide it into 8 to 10 acre parcels. Ironically, the whole reason I had bought the property was my frustration with my HOA and my quest for “10 acres to live in the middle of.” Instead, I ended up with 82 acres—a very Craig-like thing to do—and we lived there for five years without ever building our dream home on it. But, the contentment that comes with living privately on land was mostly what we were originally seeking, it turned out.
As I split the property and met with buyers, I discovered there were many people seeking the same thing I had wanted: FREEDOM. I catered to the buyers’ needs and sold all of my property, but the inquiries didn’t stop. Friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues of my buyers were all looking for the same thing. So, the only logical step was to acquire more property!
Today, after seven projects, Millwood Land Company (AKA EscapeTheHOA) is now a four-person team. We have sold dream properties to dozens of families and have helped them find builders, bankers, and everything else they need to turn their dreams into reality. Everything was great! CK was having its best years, led by amazing people and Millwood was going really well. Everyone was happy as a clam. And then it went sideways overnight …
