The CK Daily – The Meaning of Community

Good morning & Happy Wednesday!

I hope you are having a great week. I’ll be honest, the impacts of the hurricane have been heavy on my heart this week. It is all hitting so close to home. My younger brother attends college at Valdosta State University. He was able to get to safety on campus in his residence hall, but boy was it a scary site that he woke up to the following day. The photos and videos he sent us of the town…just heart breaking. Thankfully, he was able to find his way out and home and is spending some time with us while power is being restored.

Then, we continue to see the where we just moved from, the Greenville/Spartanburg area, hit also pretty hard and without power, even still for many. Western North Carolina just has my heart breaking. I spent my summers there in college and have so many personal ties there of friends that I made during those times. There are still so many things unknown for what is going on there and I know many are still looking for ways that we can help. If you know of ways that we can make a direct impact into those communities, please share them.

Storms are always a tough thing to understand and navigate. There is so much power in them but the amount of control that we have to give up and trust that there is a greater plan for whatever we may face in them is hard. You want to tie things down, get everyone to shelter, hope trees stand strong, that lives are not lost…so many things. It’s heavy.

At the end of it all, I think it comes down to community. Our local community here has recently dealt with a local school shooting that, as they all are, was devastating. And the community has rallied to support the families impacted, the students impacted, the teachers impacted, the officers, everyone involved. With Hurricane Helene, the same thing. People in the community are literally boots on the ground giving everything they have of themselves to help their neighbors, people they don’t even know, but people they consider a community. There’s just nothing like it.

All this said, things lately are heavy. There’s so much going on in the world. I hope that you take some time to reflect on the things going on around you and just take some time to debrief. It can be overwhelming. Here for you, thinking of you, grateful for you. The CK Daily community is truly a unique one and we’re so grateful.

Ashley
