The CK Daily – Earliest Internet Memories
Happy Monday! This weekend was pretty uneventful, but I did have a PC gaming night with some virtual friends. There were about 8 of us playing an immersive military simulation called Insurgency: Sandstorm.
Our group consists of a lot of parents, and we play together once or twice a month and it’s been a blast. It reminds me of LANs I used to have when I was in high school where we would physically bring our PCs to our friend’s houses to play games like Counter-Strike and StarCraft. My friends and I even met at LAN cafés aka PC Bangs (these were a thing in the early 2000s) where PCs were set up together with a T1 line and you could play games for an hourly rate. Internet speed has advanced so much these days that latency and lag are no longer an issue.
It’s amazing how much technology has advanced in the last 20 years. I distinctly remember the “you’ve got mail” sound from AOL back in the day when you had to use your modem tied to a telephone line to connect to the internet. I don’t think many people, especially in the newer generation (born after 2000) have telephone landlines! What are your earliest memories of the internet? I’m guessing some of you were born into the internet age and didn’t get to experience the joy/pain of dialup!
