Happy Monday

January 18, 2021, is the federal holiday that marks Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday day & MLK Jr Day of Service. – “Not everybody can be famous but everybody can be great because greatness is determined by service… You only need a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love.” – MLK, Jr.

Good Monday morning! Jason here, filling in for Christin this morning.

I hope all of you had a great weekend and I imagine several of you are continuing with a 3-day weekend due to the MLK Jr commemorative holiday.

For me, my weekend was absolutely non-stop. After 5 days on the market, my house went under contract. Selling and buying/building a house is not for the faint of heart. Haha! You just never know what you are going to run into in dealing with other people while buying and selling. I was very thankful that the lady that I am selling the house to has been very easy to work with. Hopefully, that will continue through the home inspection this week and then the appraisal process.

Last Thursday I kinda had a freakout moment with the house and just worrying about getting it sold and everything done. I remember driving in my car, talking with God about it, and thinking through what I needed to do (more like worrying about), and I felt that still, small voice speak in my heart, “Are you operating out of fear, or are you operating out of faith?”

I just hung my head because I knew what I had been more focused on. I had been trying to do as much as I could myself and figure out every possible solution “just in case” something went wrong. God and I chatted about it off and on for the next 2 hours (mostly, God talking). Then about 4 hours after that conversation, I got the offer on the house (from a surprise showing that evening) and accepted it.

There have been plenty of moments in this process where I have stopped and asked myself, “What have you gotten yourself into?” But little by little and day by day, I have been asking God to guide my steps, give me wisdom, and show me favor with all of this. I seriously would not be even close to being sane if it wasn’t for His help.

It is not easy a lot of times (at least for me) to lay something down that I am wrestling with. I am too much of a control freak, but maybe that’s what God is trying to teach me about through this whole house situation.

I hope you have a great week!

Jason

5 Little-known Facts About Martin Luther King Jr.

  1. King’s birth name was Michael, not Martin. The civil rights leader was born Michael King Jr. on January 15, 1929. In 1934, however, his father, a pastor at Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church, traveled to Germany and became inspired by the Protestant Reformation leader Martin Luther. As a result, King Sr. changed his own name as well as that of his 5-year-old son.
  2. King entered college at the age of 15. King was such a gifted student that he skipped grades nine and 12 before enrolling in 1944 at Morehouse College, the alma mater of his father and maternal grandfather. Although he was the son, grandson and great-grandson of Baptist ministers, King did not intend to follow the family vocation until Morehouse president Benjamin E. Mays, a noted theologian, convinced him otherwise. King was ordained before graduating college with a degree in sociology.
  3. King received his doctorate in systematic theology. After earning a divinity degree from Pennsylvania’s Crozer Theological Seminary, King attended graduate school at Boston University, where he received his Ph.D. degree in 1955. The title of his dissertation was “A Comparison of the Conceptions of God in the Thinking of Paul Tillich and Henry Nelson Wieman.”
  4. King’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech was not his first at the Lincoln Memorial. Six years before his iconic oration at the March on Washington, King was among the civil rights leaders who spoke in the shadow of the Great Emancipator during the Prayer Pilgrimage for Freedom on May 17, 1957. Before a crowd estimated at between 15,000 and 30,000, King delivered his first national address on the topic of voting rights. His speech, in which he urged America to “give us the ballot,” drew strong reviews and positioned him at the forefront of the civil rights leadership.
  5. King is the only non-president to have a national holiday in his name – In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed a bill that would establish a nationally observed holiday in remembrance of King. He is the only non-president to have received such an honor; the other American to have a holiday commemorated in his name is George Washington. The holiday was first celebrated in 1986 on the third Monday in January, close to MLK’s birthday on January 15. He is also the only non-president with a memorial located on the National Mall in Washington, DC.
