CEO Daily Update – 10.16.2020

October 16, 2020 by Jason Gazaway

Word for The Year | Gloves Back in Stock | Don’t Be A Know-It-All | News to Start Your Day

It’s Friday!!

(October 16th is National Boss’s Day. National Sports Day, and Global Cat Day…so take your pick on which to celebrate today.)

——

Well, it’s Friday and I’m not Christin. lol! She asked if I could fill in for her today and I always enjoy getting to talk to all of you.

If you are like me, then you are probably just as surprised as I am that we are already in mid-October. It is crazy how quickly this month has flown by, even how fast this year has gone by at times. I was joking with a buddy the other day about the craziness of this year and told him it felt like the year went like, “January, February, March, March, March, April, April, April, Ma-Ju-Jul-Aug-Sept-Oct.” I imagine the rest of the year will fly by just as fast, which means after Halloween next week, Thanksgiving and Christmas will be right around the corner before we know it.

Every year, I end it by reflecting on the past year and then nailing down what I need to focus on for the next year. I usually try and narrow it down to one word or a short phrase. For 2020, my phrase for the year was “Focus on the things that REALLY matter.” At the core of it was to be intentional about my relationships, my time, my energy, my health, and my spiritual walk. Little did I know how different 2020 would be than what I thought it would be at the start of the year and that phrase and the meaning behind it took on a whole new intensity during the year. I realized some things weren’t worth my time, effort, and energy and were just a distraction. Other things became more important, like my relationships and health, and gained more energy and time. The shift in focus has been very impactful for me both personally and professionally.

So, I have started the process already of looking towards 2021 (I think everyone has and just wants to move on from 2020, haha!). Right now, the concept for my word/phrase revolves around “Restore”. Not sure how it will evolve and what insights I will gain about it between now and the end of the year, but I am looking forward to continuing the process.

Have you ever done something like this? Do you usually have a focus for the year or do you just go with the flow? I don’t think either way is right or wrong, I think it is just different for each person depending on their personality. Just curious.

Hope you have a great Friday and weekend! It’s going to be chilly here in the South. I am ready for some real Fall weather!

Jason

Don’t Be A Know-It-All – by Gary our Chief Administrative Officer

(If you missed the previous parts of this series, you can read them on our blog.)

Apollo Mission Moment #10

When the mission appeared doomed, Flight Director, Gene Kranz openly demonstrated a leadership style that could be perceived as a weakness, but was in fact, a potent display of strength. Rather than taking a know-it-all attitude and firing out orders, Kranz asked, “What do we have on the spacecraft that’s good?” And later he said, “I don’t care what it was designed to do. I want to know what it can do.”

It is natural and predictable that people focus on defeats, disappointments and other negatives. An organization leader needs to keep the team concentrated on possibilities to ensure they do not ignore any potential solutions.

LEVERAGING THE MOMENT:

  1. Learn to ask good questions. They shape perspectives and uncover potential solutions.
  2. Get involved in problems. They offer great opportunities to learn, and organizations love effective problem solvers.

“You don’t become enormously successful without encountering some really interesting problems.” (Mark Victor Hansen)

News to Start Your Day With:

  • Right at 39,253,100 cases worldwide, with 29,422,400 people who have recovered, with 1,104,169 deaths AND 8,219,800 cases in the US with over 5,320,700 people have recovered, with 222,781 deaths.
  • Social Security benefits will get a 1.3% cost-of-living adjustment in 2021. But that increase is not enough to cover the extra costs retirees and other beneficiaries are facing amid Covid-19, according to two Democratic lawmakers. Now, they plan to introduce a new bill in the House of Representatives to put a 3% emergency COLA in place next year.
  • On Wednesday, Facebook and Twitter acted surprisingly quickly to limit the distribution of a New York Post report claiming to contain a “smoking gun” email related to Democratic nominee and former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter. The decision is all but certain to come up at an upcoming Senate hearing where both CEOs previously agreed to testify. Republicans on the committee have expressed concerns about alleged bias on the platforms.
  • Google on Thursday announced a handful of new features for its search engine. One new trick lets people hum an audio recording to try to figure out the song that’s stuck in their heads. The tech giant will also let people see how busy a park, restaurant or other business is with live updates. A new augmented reality feature on Google search lets people shop for cars and virtually tour them. Google made the announcements during a pretaped online event Thursday.
  • Apple’s newest iPhones — the iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, and 12 Pro Max — were announced earlier this week. Preorders for the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro begin today, and both phones will be released on Friday, October 23rd.
  • Two large pieces of orbital debris — a defunct Soviet navigation satellite and a spent Chinese rocket body — apparently whizzed safely past each other high over the South Atlantic Ocean on Thursday evening. The two craft flew 616 miles (991 kilometers) above Earth just off the coast of Antarctica. LeoLabs’ pre-encounter analyses suggested that the two objects would miss each other by just 82 feet (25 meters), plus or minus 59 feet (18 m) — numbers that left a collision very much in play.
