OM5 fiber – Ready to upgrade to OM5 fiber?

Technology never rests, and demand for bandwidth and speed keeps growing. If you want the speeds of the most recent fiber generation, OM5 is for you.

OM5 at a glance

The benefits of using OM5 fiber in your network.

Compatibility

OM5 is backwards compatible with OM3 and OM4, so you can upgrade without replacing older cables.

Distance

Up to 440 meters for 40G networks and up to 150 meters for 100G networks.

Affordability

A serious increase in performance without a serious increase in price.

Higher bandwidth

More bandwidth from a single fiber: 28 GHz.

Lower fiber loss

OM5 needs fewer fibers and can use four separate wavelengths, which results in lower loss.

Wideband multimode fiber

WBMMF extends conventional OM4 multimode fiber to support multiple wavelengths, carrying traffic from 850 to 950 nm.

OM5 vs. OM4

With OM5 you get all the benefits of OM4, plus the ability to run cable at greater distances.

What are the differences between the optical modes? The two major differences are the micron core size and the transmission.

OM1 uses a 62.5/125-micron core while the rest use a 50/125-micron core. OM1 and OM2 use LED transmitters, while OM3, OM4 and OM5 use laser-optimized multimode transmission.
