{"id":785,"date":"2011-11-08T11:39:52","date_gmt":"2011-11-08T16:39:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.cablesandkits.com\/?p=785"},"modified":"2015-08-03T16:22:03","modified_gmt":"2015-08-03T20:22:03","slug":"untangling-network-cable-types-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cablesandkits.com\/blog\/untangling-network-cable-types-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Untangling Network Cable Types"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>(This blog is an updated and extended version of a post, by our CEO, we released in September 2009)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever installed a network, either for your home, office or business, you\u2019ve probably asked yourself- With so many different types of <strong><a title=\"Cat5e\/Cat6\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cablesandkits.com\/Ethernet\" target=\"_blank\">network cabling<\/a><\/strong>, what do I really need?\u00a0 Is it a CAT5, 5E, 6, 6A, shielded or unshielded, UTP or STP? Do I need a patch\/straight through cable or a crossover cable?\u00a0 With so many different kinds of network cables to choose from, which one is right for your needs?<\/p>\n<p><strong>What types of network cable are available currently?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cat5 has been replaced by Cat5E as the general standard networking cable in new installations, with the improved signal carrying capacity being the primary reason.\u00a0 A Cat5 cable can support Ethernet and Fast Ethernet. Cat5E (Cat5 enhanced) supports Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, and Gigabit Ethernet speeds over short distances and is backward compatible with Cat5.\u00a0 Cat5E cable also has improved durability, due to improvements in the quality of the PVC protective jacket. It is more than suitable for most data cabling requirements.<\/p>\n<p>Cat6 is one of the newest versions of network cabling, and is very similar to Cat5E, but specifically designed to consistently deliver 1 Gigabit Ethernet. It is used in installations where a Cat6 Certified Network is required.<\/p>\n<p>While Cat5E and Cat6 can support Gigabit speeds, Cat6A (Cat6 Augmented) is certified to 10 Gigabit speeds and is backward compatible with the all the existing standards, and is suitable for industries utilizing high-performance computing platforms to support very high bandwidth-intensive applications. 10G\/Cat 6A applications would be server farms, storage area networks, data centers &amp; riser backbones.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Table 1: Overview of Ethernet Cables<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_826\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-826\" style=\"width: 479px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.cablesandkits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/2.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-826\" title=\"Table 1: Overview of Ethernet Cables\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.cablesandkits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/2.png\" alt=\"Table 1: Overview of Ethernet Cables\" width=\"479\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cablesandkits.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/2.png 666w, https:\/\/www.cablesandkits.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/2-300x160.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 479px) 100vw, 479px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">*All cables are backwards compatible, meaning the higher categories can work with the lower categories of Ethernet. For Example the CAT6A can work in place of a CAT5E if needed. We currently do not carry the CAT5 rated cable as the CAT5E has essentially rendered it obsolete. The illustrations below exaggerate typical uses.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.cablesandkits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/14.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-845\" title=\"Cat Cabling Uses\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.cablesandkits.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/14.png\" alt=\"Cat Cabling Uses\" width=\"474\" height=\"248\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.cablesandkits.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/14.png 597w, https:\/\/www.cablesandkits.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/11\/14-300x157.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the difference between stranded, solid cable, and plenum rated cables?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cat 5E, 6 and 6a can all be purchased in stranded or solid wire construction. \u00a0The core of the cable is comprised of insulated strands of copper so that it can be flexed repeatedly without the copper cores of the conductors breaking. Solid Cat5E is primarily used for in wall\/permanent applications. The cable cores are comprised of one single solid strand of copper. This allows the cable to carry signals over longer distances but cannot be flexed too many times without the copper cores breaking. Some examples of connections made with patch cables would include:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Patch Panel to Computer<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Computer to DSL\/Cable Modem<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Computer to Hub<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0DSL\/Cable Modem to Router<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0DSL\/Cable Modem to Hub<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0DSL\/Cable Modem to Wireless Access Point<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Wall Plate to Computer<\/p>\n<p>Crossover cables are used in situations where two devices have the same interface, for example, connecting a hub to a hub, or a switch to a switch, or patching a hub or switch into a wall plate. Some examples of connections made with crossover cables would include:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Switch to Switch<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Computer to Computer (peer-to-peer network)<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Hub to Hub<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0Access point to Access point<\/p>\n<p>These types of cables also come in shielded versions. Shielded Cable or STP (Shielded Twisted Pair) has a protective &#8220;foil&#8221; that surrounds the cable. Shielded cable was designed to prevent strong sources of Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Radio Frequency Interference (RFI), from affecting the ability of the cable to transmit data. Generators, Elevator motors, and many types of lighting will produce strong EMI that can pass through the cable, corrupting your data and shutting down communication.
