{"id":477,"date":"2010-12-28T15:09:56","date_gmt":"2010-12-28T20:09:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.cablesandkits.com\/?p=477"},"modified":"2017-08-17T15:55:27","modified_gmt":"2017-08-17T19:55:27","slug":"culture-a-recipe-for-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cablesandkits.com\/blog\/culture-a-recipe-for-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Culture: A Recipe for Success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cCulture\u201d- it has become a popular buzzword in the workplace in recent years.\u00a0 You hear about this concept in several variations such as:\u00a0 Organizational Culture, Corporate Culture or Company Culture.\u00a0 Since the images of \u201cCorporate\u201d or \u201cOrganizational\u201d Culture bring up \u00a0negative connotations for me personally, I prefer to refer to it as \u201cCompany Culture\u201d.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Just typing the words \u201cOrganizational Culture\u201d brings images to my mind of an impersonal culture based on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.orgchart.net\/wiki\/Main_Page\">org charts<\/a> and uninvolved Boards of Directors.\u00a0 Quite different from the living, breathing, growing, ever-changing organism that is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cablesandkits.com\/\">CablesAndKits<\/a>!\u00a0 Even worse visions dance through my head from\u00a0 the phrase \u201cCorporate Culture\u201d. With that one, I picture large corporations whose culture is based on outdated policies and procedures penned by people wearing suits and sitting in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ivory_Tower\">ivory towers<\/a>. The \u201crules\u201d, though obsolete and inapplicable, remain in place because \u201cthat\u2019s the way we\u2019ve always done it here.\u201d (Proclaimed in deep corporate tones). That is the polar opposite of CnK\u2019s entrepreneurial atmosphere, where the only constant is change, and where creativity, innovation, and collaboration are the order of each day. In other words, <a href=\"http:\/\/idioms.thefreedictionary.com\/fly+by+the+seat+of+pants\">we fly by the seat of our pants<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>So how does the web (notice I didn\u2019t say Webster\u2019s \u2013 duh \u2013 we are a technology company, after all) define <a href=\"http:\/\/management.about.com\/cs\/generalmanagement\/g\/culture.htm\">Company Culture<\/a>? \u201cIt is the term given to the shared values and practices of the employees. (Note that the actual culture may not match the published culture)\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessdictionary.com\/definition\/organizational-culture.html#ixzz10qHMIfuv\">Or try this one on for size<\/a>: \u00a0\u201cAlternative phrase for organizational culture\u201d, (at least it didn\u2019t say alternative phrase for corporate culture), \u201c <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessdictionary.com\/definition\/pervasive.html\">Pervasive<\/a>, deep, largely subconscious, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.investorwords.com\/4858\/tacit.html\">tacit<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessdictionary.com\/definition\/code.html\">code<\/a> that gives the &#8216;feel&#8217; of an organization and determines what is considered right or wrong, important or unimportant, workable or unworkable in it, and how it responds to the unexpected crises, jolts, and sudden\u00a0change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bnet.com\/topics\/Corporate+Culture\">Check here<\/a> if you really want to do some in depth reading on Company Culture, but I like the definition I found that said, simply put, your company\u2019s culture is it\u2019s personality. \u00a0That means you can have a good one, a bad one or not much of one, right? \u00a0Or maybe you can have a \u201cgreat personality\u201d, and we all know what that means!\u00a0 (OK, so I really wanted to provide a link for this one, but my favorite Urban Dictionary definition would probably get me in trouble!)<\/p>\n<p>There are several commonly known \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Personality_test\">personality tests<\/a>\u201d and we happen to use the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discprofile.com\/\">DiSC<\/a> as part of our team building process.\u00a0 We always tell our team members that there are no \u201cright\u201d or \u201cwrong\u201d personality types, but between you and the HR Manager (me), some of them are definitely easier to get along with than others! And we all have different personality types we are more compatible with, depending on our own characteristics. It is the same way with Company Cultures.
