Happy Monday to you all! We enjoyed such beautiful weather here in Georgia this weekend, and we ventured out to a pumpkin patch with some friends. The kids enjoyed the play areas, bounce houses and petting zoo, and we all got a laugh at the pig races. “Piggies start your engines!” Our kids picked out two big pumpkins that we’ve decided to paint instead of carve, so that’s an adventure for this week.
 
I didn’t read a book this weekend, but I did cook a couple of new things. I have some recipes saved to Pinterest and choose new ones to try when I’m in a dinner rut. This chicken tortellini soup<\/a> was pretty good, though I would leave the bell pepper out next time {personal preference}. I also enjoyed making a new recipe for Craig, a curry with roast, onion, mushrooms, and sweet potatoes. He put it over some roasted cauliflower. I love fall cooking.

Goals vs Good Effort – by Gary our Chief Administrative Officer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hello! Gary, here. I’m a big fan of the space program. I came of age during the race for the moon in the 60’s. The Apollo program moon missions captivated the nation, but that attention plummeted after the successful moon landing of Apollo 11. However, an explosion during Apollo 13’s April 1970 outbound trip to the moon immediately recaptured and riveted the nation’s attention. I distinctly remember sitting in a sixth grade classroom in my small farm town school following the mission on TV. Seventeen (17) years ago, a brilliant business leader conceived of using that mission and the exception Tom Hanks-starring movie as a tool for teaching his team some crucial business lessons. I later joined him in converting his initial work into a leadership development program we taught to over 50 companies. I had an idea in recent days to share with readers of this CEO Daily Email snapshots of key lessons from the Apollo 13 mission that we can apply in our personal and professional lives. There are 13 lessons–Are you surprised? Haha. Here’s the first one. I’ll let our co-founder, Christin, and team member, Jason, decide when to sprinkle in the remaining 12 lessons. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apollo Mission Moment #1 <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the Apollo 13 crisis, Flight Director, Gene Kranz, set tough goals. With only 45 projected hours of remaining electrical power, the revised mission was woefully short of a successful recovery. Even so, Kranz refused to concede failure. He confronted his team with this challenge\u2026 \u201cWe\u2019ve never lost an American in space. We\u2019re not going to lose one on my watch. Failure is not an option.\u201d With this deeply emotional and blunt statement, Kranz staked his own reputation on finding a solution and inspired others to take up the challenge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When faced with difficult odds, well-intentioned managers implore their teams to \u201cgive their best.\u201d Team members may interpret this as an implicit acknowledgment that failure is acceptable. Yet in business as in life, good can be the greatest enemy of best. Do not set yourself or your business up for second best by settling for a good effort. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

LEVERAGING THE MOMENT: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Carefully consider the cost before making a commitment. Your integrity and effectiveness in the eyes of others are at stake. <\/li>
  2. Set high goals for yourself and your team and make them public. The added pressure of public goals can fuel the persistence necessary to achieve a dream. <\/li>
  3. Aspire to personal and corporate excellence without becoming enslaved to details. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    COVID \/ Tech \/ Business News to Start Your Day With:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Right at 35,443,3 cases worldwide, with 26,649,630 people who have recovered, with 1,042,604 deaths AND 7,637,066 cases in the US with over 4,849,454 people have recovered, with 214,615 deaths.<\/strong><\/li>
    • President Trump White House physicians said President Trump may be released from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center today. Sunday the president began treatment with dexamethasone, a steroid that has shown promise for critically ill patients but may cause harm to those with less severe cases. Since his diagnosis, Trump was also treated with Gilead Sciences\u2019 antiviral drug remdesivir, which has been approved for emergency use, and an experimental antibody cocktail from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals.<\/li>
    • New York City officials announced plans to close all nonessential businesses and schools in nine Brooklyn and Queens Zip codes, marking the city\u2019s first big reversal since reopening this spring.<\/li>
    • U.S. stocks appeared set to recoup some of last week\u2019s losses on Monday, as global markets were stabilized by President Trump\u2019s efforts to demonstrate that he is recovering from a novel coronavirus infection. European and Asian stock markets rallied after one of Trump\u2019s doctors said the president could be discharged as soon as Monday from the hospital. U.S. index futures were about 0.5 percent higher in overnight trading, pointing to a likely bounce when the U.S. stock markets open.<\/li>
    • Cineworld will close its U.K. and U.S. movie theatres this week, leaving as many as 45,000 workers unemployed. The world\u2019s second-biggest cinema chain is fighting a coronavirus-related collapse in film releases and cinema-going.<\/li>
    • Just about 29 hours before the Patriots were scheduled to kick off their Week 4 showdown against the Chiefs — and only a couple of hours before the team was scheduled to depart from Foxboro, news broke that delayed the trip — and the game.
