My previous post “It’s an Inspiration. Why You Cannot Motivate Anyone.” explained the differences between motivation (internal drivers that push each of us) and inspiration (external animating forces that pull the best out of others). Here are 15 practical leadership suggestions that can inspire others. Any single suggestion produces positive results. The effects rise exponentially when leaders consistently apply multiple approaches over a sustained period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before I launch into the list, let me highlight a subtle trap. Essentially all these suggestions fall into the \u201cI knew that\u201d category, but that\u2019s irrelevant. Many of us too often fall into the I-knew-that-but-I-don\u2019t-do-that category. The key difference between great and average leaders is not what they know about leadership, but what they consistently do as leaders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Understand \u201cwhat\u201d motivates someone before we begin talking about \u201chow\u201d to inspire them. <\/strong>We mistakenly presume too much or overlay our own motivators on others. There are assessments available to help you understand the motivational drivers of your people. Consider using them as tools to help you lead. <\/li>
  2. Inspiring excellence is about aligning talents and passions with job requirements and objectives. <\/strong>Business people frequently place too much value on experience and skills and ignore or devalue the importance of core talents. If someone works in a job that utilizes their core talents they will most likely be more successful, and that success energizes them. <\/li>
  3. People respond reluctantly to a position.<\/strong> Relationships inspire them. Leaders must make sustained investment into the lives of others. <\/li>
  4. Understand their price point. Everyone has a different price point beyond which they will not voluntarily go\u2014you need to know where it is. <\/li>
  5. Everyone inherently aspires to belong to something bigger than themselves.<\/strong> People are not inspired by a corporate brand. A soldier fights and dies for the person in the foxhole beside them not the U.S. Army. In the absence of a shared vision \/ common objectives, we all default to personal motivation drivers (i.e, is this good for me?). <\/li>
  6. Principled. Resolute. Predictable.<\/strong> Make sound, principle-based decisions. People despise weathervane managers who too often allow the latest idea or the last voice to sway decisions. Resoluteness also cultivates courage in others. <\/li>
  7. Good people inspire others around them. <\/strong>They constructively urge each other on to better performance and unlock positive peer pressure. On the flip side, unchallenged poor performance is a huge de-motivator. Good people will resent it and eventually leave. <\/li>
  8. Sacrifice inspires people<\/strong>\u2026especially when it benefits them. It\u2019s not about YOU! <\/li>
  9. People reciprocally respond with loyalty when leaders \u201chave their backside.\u201d <\/strong>Team members deal with enough uncertainty and surprises in their lives without having to wonder whether the leader will loyally support them. <\/li>
  10. Be a compassionate and timely straight shooter.<\/strong> Don\u2019t coddle people and hide bad news. Be honest about individual and company performance. <\/li>
  11. Leadership confidence and energy are contagious.<\/strong> Your passion ignites those around you. Your pessimism drains them. <\/li>
  12. Genuineness attracts people. <\/strong>We react to self-serving pretentiousness with revulsion. <\/li>
  13. Celebrate success!<\/strong> None of us likes to feel stagnant. Openly acknowledge progress and express gratitude for the contributions of others. <\/li>
  14. Committed to learning. <\/strong>People feel inspired by those who humbly admit and learn from their mistakes. Transparent students of life and business unlock the native streak of curiosity in us all. <\/li>
  15. Daily practice gratitude. <\/strong>Sharing credit inspires a sense of belonging and fulfills our inherent need to make a contribution. Leaders who regularly express gratitude for the contribution of others inspire team members to do more. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    • <\/strong>Right at 32,140,800 cases worldwide, with 23,708,600 people who have recovered, with 982,748 deaths AND 7,141,500 cases in the US with over 4,400,300 people have recovered, with 206,616 deaths.<\/strong><\/li>
    • Robots in Singapore will soon be stationed in hospitals, taking the temperature of arrivals, checking them in and even denying them entry if they fail to comply with coronavirus rules such as social distancing or wearing a face covering. Beginning October, a security robot will welcome people at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, and there will be one at Alexandra Hospital starting in November, local media reported Thursday. The National University Hospital will also be relying on a robot to monitor suspicious behavior such as overcrowding. Once detected, the robot will send an alert to the hospital\u2019s in-house security team.<\/li>
    • Dozens of employees at the world\u2019s largest hedge fund have been working from tents in the Connecticut woods for months, Fortune magazine reports. Bridgewater Associates, which manages roughly $140 billion in assets, attempted to reopen its offices this spring but found that constant mask-wearing and other safety protocols added a new layer of stress. So roughly 50 employees moved outdoors, setting up shop in a rustic pine grove outside the firm\u2019s Westport, Conn., headquarters.<\/li>
    • Thousands of students and teachers have become sick with the coronavirus since schools began opening last month, but public health experts have found little evidence that the virus is spreading inside buildings, and the rates of infection are far below what is found in the surrounding communities. This early evidence, experts say, suggests that opening schools may not be as risky as many have feared and could guide administrators as they chart the rest of what is already an unprecedented school year.<\/li>
    • Shares of Dow component Walt Disney, relatively steady in the premarket, lost 3% on Wednesday after the company moved a number of its movies to later this year and into 2021 as Americans continue to avoid indoor movie theaters during the pandemic. The much-anticipated Marvel blockbuster \u201cBlack Widow\u201d was postponed six months to May. \u201cWest Side Story\u201d was moved back a year to December 2021.<\/li>
    • Western Digital has announced major reorganization plans designed to streamline development of new hard drives and solid-state drives. From now on, Western Digital will have two separate business units dealing with HDDs and SSDs each led by its own general manager.
