The diversity technology minimizes most of the negative effects caused by deploying access points in challenging environments such as factories, warehouses and retail stores where obstructions such as metal racking and structural variations cause wireless signals to reflect and delay before they are received. Diversity utilizes two antennas instead of one to essentially “pick” the best signal. Due to the antennas being in separate physical locations (both housed within the case of the LAP1131AG) they are able to sample two different zones in the transmission range. This increases the likelihood the access point will field a signal that’s usable. It will "see" the same signal from two different points of view, compare them, and then pick the one that most intelligible.
These access points can be deployed autonomously in numbers that scale to the size of the application. With the need for a WLAN controller eliminated, these access points manage hand-off and other management functions "in-house" and operate on their own once configured.
